  • A nonprofit organization and Christ Community Church are partnering to host a hiring event offering free resume help and one-on-one job coaching. The event will take place Thursday, Jan. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Christ Community Church, 4050 Colonial Blvd.  WGCU
  • The 33rd Annual Boston Red Sox Celebrity Classic Event Series will launch with a Boston Tee Party on Feb. 12 and a celebrity golf tournament on Feb. 13 at The Forest Country Club, followed by Dinner on the Diamond on Mar. 10 at JetBlue Park; sponsorship and registration are now open to support services at Golisano Children’s Hospital.  Cape Coral Breeze
  • Valerie's House raised $641K at its second annual Sunset Soiree on Jan. 6 to support peer support groups for grieving children and families in Fort Myers—funds will aid programs including Spanish and school services. The nonprofit has helped more than 7,500 children since 2016.  The News-Press
  • The Heights Foundation will host its 18th Love Your Neighbor gala on Feb. 1 from 5 to 10 p.m. at The Heights Center in Fort Myers. The event will feature cocktails, gourmet dining by chef Harold Balink, live music, auctions and performances by children from its programs.  The News-Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • JetBlue announced new year-round routes connecting Fort Lauderdale to Orlando and Dallas and added extra flights to New York, with a new service from Fort Myers to Buffalo starting March 26. The move is part of the airline's larger Florida expansion.  The News-Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • The cast of 'Grumpy Old Men: The Musical' previewed the show on Tuesday in a studio visit. The musical runs Jan. 8 – 18 at TheatreZone in Naples and offers humor, heartfelt songs, and fresh takes on the classic film.  ABC7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, harmless red drift algae washed up along Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel, and experts said it gives food and shelter for birds and small marine life (a natural boost for the local ecosystem).  The News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Big Carlos Pass Bridge was closed for 30 minutes on Tuesday night (8 p.m. to 6 a.m.) as crews set final beams for the new fixed-span project, and it will close again Friday night to help finish the work connecting Fort Myers Beach to Lovers Key State Park.  WINK News

  • Cape Coral’s Al’mirian Thomas is named SW Florida’s 2025 Football Defensive Player of the Year, and readers can vote on his pick until Saturday, Jan. 10 at 9 a.m.  The News-Press
  • Seacrest's Sonya Kiritsa has been rehabbing an ACL for 15 months and is expected to rejoin the team for the postseason, while ECS's Kellisia Grant remains uncertain after injuring her knee this summer. Both athletes rank among the area's top talents.  The News-Press
