COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Valerie's House marked 10 years supporting grieving children, teens and families as local councilmembers and county commissioners honored its impact in Fort Myers. Founded by Angela Melvin in honor of her mother, the nonprofit offers therapy, arts and sports (a trusted resource for coping with loss).  WINK News
  • IMAG History & Science Center is hosting a Community Day event on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 2000 Cranford Avenue, where kids 18 and under are free and adults get half-price admission when tickets are reserved online (local groups and nonprofits will lead animal and science shows).  Florida Weekly

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new exhibit featuring rarely seen works by influential artist Robert Rauschenberg opened Jan. 15 at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery Annex and will run through May 2 — it features a replica of the Apollo 12 Moon Museum and his self portrait triptych Autobiography.  The News-Press
  • City of Fort Myers Parks and Recreation will host the 22nd Caloosahatchee Celtic Festival at the Caloosa Sound Amphitheater on Jan. 24-25, 2026 (with music, food and cultural events) while children 12 and under enter free and drink sales support local youth programs.  Florida Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Caloosahatchee River is seeing record-high salinity that threatens fish, seagrass, and manatees as low rainfall has reduced fresh water flows. Scientists from SCCF are exploring ways to boost water from Lake Okeechobee + rainfall to restore the ecosystem.  WINK News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lee Board of County Commissioners approved a design and permitting contract for Phase 1 improvements at Kiker + Flint Pen Strand preserves on Tuesday; the project will boost flood control, water quality, and aquifer recharge. Johnson Engineering Inc. will complete design and permitting by late 2028.  WGCU
  • Lee County officials enacted a burn ban effective immediately due to dry conditions. The ordinance bans campfires, bonfires and trash burning while allowing grills for food, and officials will monitor drought levels to determine when to lift the restrictions.  North Fort Myers Neighbor
  • Fort Myers drivers must follow the expanded Move Over Law this January for road safety. The law now requires shifting over or slowing by 20 mph below the speed limit when vehicles display hazard lights.  WINK News

  • NAMI Southwest Florida will host its eighth annual Sunset Strides 5K on Saturday, March 14 in downtown Fort Myers, with registration opening at 4 p.m. and the walk starting at 6 p.m. along a scenic route from Centennial Park to the Edison Bridge—sponsorship opportunities support mental health services and education.  Cape Coral Breeze
  • Lee Health opened its Advanced Heart Failure Center at HealthPark Medical Center to provide care for patients who once left the region for treatment; an open house and ribbon cutting were held on Jan. 16.
