CULTURE NEWS

  • Southwest Florida community theaters have a packed week with three new shows opening including Sweeney Todd at Cultural Park Theatre on Jan. 23, while seven shows close and 16 continue their runs + one limited engagement rounds out the schedule for local audiences.  WGCU
  • The National Shell Museum on Sanibel launches Third Thursdays – a new evening program with exhibits, live music, talks and crafts for all ages on every third Thursday starting in February. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children, with free entry for members and kids under 5.  Beach Talk Radio
  • Amateur photographers can submit digital photos of native species for the Friends of Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve 2026 Photo Contest (honoring Carolyn Babb) by Jan. 31. The contest accepts entries only from those capturing images at the preserve.  Florida Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents of unincorporated Lee County must water lawns only one day per week from Feb. 1 through May to conserve water; odd-numbered addresses water on Saturdays and even-numbered addresses water on Sundays — watering is prohibited from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  WGCU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lee County Sheriff’s Office is launching a new partnership with Family Initiative Incorporated through licensed clinical professionals (and Golden Paws Crisis Care canine teams) to help deputies respond to calls involving individuals with developmental disabilities, while families can enroll members in a Special Persons Registry at any substation.  Fox 4
  • Fort Myers City Council awarded $356,000 on Tuesday to Indianapolis-based Card and Associates to study redevelopment options for City of Palms Park, the former spring training site for the Red Sox. The study could lead to eventual demolition, but no date is set.  WGCU

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Florida couple sued an IVF clinic after genetic testing showed their daughter, born Dec. 11, did not share their DNA. They ask the Palm Beach County Circuit Court to require the clinic to notify patients + offer free genetic tests for anyone conceived via its services.  ABC7
  • Seniors Blue Book hosts two symposiums to help seniors age well, with the Preparing for Aging Symposium held today from 8 a.m. to noon at St. John Evangelist Church in Naples and a Tuesday, Feb. 24 event from 8 a.m. to noon at Gulf Coast Church in Fort Myers.  Florida Weekly
  • The Red Cross announced a severe blood shortage linked to a flu outbreak and harsh winter weather, causing cancelled drives and low supplies of critical blood types. Lee Health urges donations while NCH holds drives Friday & Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Sembler Plaza in Naples.  WINK News
