EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida lawmakers introduced House Bill 127 to require elementary students to learn cursive writing by testing them at the end of fifth grade & the House Education & Employment Committee passed the bill Thursday in Fort Myers, with a planned effective date in July if approved by the full House.  Fox 4

FINANCE NEWS

  • Tax season is coming and local residents are advised to stay alert of ghost tax preparers (those who promise fast refunds but do not sign returns), to avoid unexpected problems. Experts recommend double-checking your forms and reporting any suspicious activity.  WINK News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lee County's health department issued a blue-green algae alert on Friday for the Caloosahatchee River-Sebastian Canal after detecting toxins that might harm humans and pets — residents, especially those at risk, are advised to avoid contact with the water and wash quickly if exposed.  ABC7
  • A big winter storm is approaching and local psychiatrist Dr. Frank Clark advises residents to prepare by stocking up on nonperishables and ensuring generators are ready (and taking breaks from media). He stresses staying connected with trusted friends and seeking professional help if anxiety worsens.  NBC2

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • North Fort Myers’ Shell Factory (a cherished landmark with a historic shell shop and mini golf) was sold for nearly $4 million after closing in September 2024; locals hope a new era begins as the property was acquired by Shell NFM LLC in Boca Raton.  WINK News

  • Yesterday, the 35th annual Tour de Cape held a 5K run and a mini kids' bike ride at Rotary Park Environmental Center (finishers received breakfast, T-shirts, and pizza along a course ending near Tarpon Point Marina). Cycling events will start tomorrow morning.  NBC2
  • High school basketball thrilled fans at the inaugural TNT Classic held Saturday at Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers. The event, presented by the North Law Firm, featured competitive games that supported local schools’ teams + cheerleaders.  WINK News
  • FSW baseball started its season at home with a doubleheader win over Lake Land; the Bucs won the first game (7-5) and the second game (15-3) with nine runs on ten hits in the first three innings. They will host No. 8 Florence Darlington on Monday at 1 p.m. on campus.  NBC2
