  • Fort Myers' Harry Chapin Food Bank, founded in 1983 (the largest hunger-relief nonprofit in Southwest Florida), feeds 300,000 people monthly through 150 partner agencies with 96 cents of every donation supporting food programs. CEO Richard Leber, in charge for a decade, noted its Charity Navigator four-star rating for 13 years.  WINK News
  • Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife will host its 24th Annual Burrowing Owl Festival on Feb. 28 at Rotary Park— the free expo runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offers wildlife tours, live animal presentations, and kids activities, with a $5 donation for attendees ages 12 and older.  WGCU
  • Bay Street Yard in downtown Fort Myers held its Charitable Pour bourbon dinner on Jan. 21 that raised $22,650 for 4KIDS. The sold-out event featured a four-course dinner paired with premium Four Roses bourbons & live music.  Florida Weekly
  • The Lee County Athletic Conference will honor eight new inductees at a banquet at the DoubleTree Hotel in Fort Myers on Wednesday, April 8; the event features local standout Destanni Henderson + Dunbar football coach Sammy Brown, who have long boosted our sports legacy.  The News-Press

  • Darden Restaurants announced all 28 Bahama Breeze locations will close or convert, with 14 shutting permanently by April 5 and 14 set for conversion within 12-18 months. In Fort Myers, the site at 14701 S Tamiami Trail will change to a new Darden brand.  The News-Press

  • Fort Myers and Bonita Springs will host several cultural events this weekend and beyond. Highlights include ArtFest Fort Myers Feb. 7 to 8 at Edwards Drive in downtown and Bonita Springs National Art Fest at Riverside Park, plus ongoing shows like a Broadway pop musical in south Fort Myers.  The News-Press

  • Trader Joe's surpassed Publix in the 2026 American Customer Satisfaction Index with a score of 86 to 84. Local shoppers can visit Trader Joe's in Fort Myers or North Naples as the ranking reflects rising approval for the chain.  The News-Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Feb. 2, a bright bluish-green fireball shot across the Gulf near Bonita Springs at 9:37 p.m., moving at 71,000+ mph before breaking apart; over 75 Florida residents reported the sight as part of the spring fireball season.  The News-Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Human Pink Ribbon event at Bell Tower will raise funds for Partners for Breast Cancer Care on Feb. 21 from 9 to 11 a.m. Organizers aim to surpass last year's nearly $15,000 to help uninsured patients.  The News-Press
  • A new emergency veterinary hospital, VEG ER for Pets, will open Thursday, Feb. 5 at (5010 S. Cleveland Ave) with a 11:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting. The facility offers 24/7 care including surgery, imaging, and overnight stays and lets pet owners stay with their animals during treatment.  WINK News
