  • Cape Coral Animal Shelter will host its annual PJs and Paws (a fundraiser featuring pet-friendly activities) on Feb. 27 at 325 SW 2nd Avenue. Participants dressed in pajamas will help raise funds for a new 19,000 sqft shelter and expanded clinic.  The News-Press

  • Rising car prices are pushing Fort Myers drivers to hold onto older vehicles longer. Legendary Automotive experts warn that skipping routine maintenance, such as checking brakes, tires, and fluids + missing upkeep, could lead to safety hazards.  NBC2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lee County’s $325.48 million project will expand the Cape Coral Bridge from four lanes to six by 2031 to ease congestion for vehicles + pedestrians. The design phase finishes in 2026 and construction begins in 2027, improving travel over the Caloosahatchee River between Cape Coral and Fort Myers.  WGCU
  • Cape Coral sold nearly 50 acres of waterfront land for $20 million to develop a mixed-use project with a hotel, condos, stores, and a marina. The sale left $13.6 million for city projects, and developers will begin construction once permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are secured.  ABC7
  • The government shutdown began today when Congress left Washington, D.C. (at 12:01 a.m.), forcing TSA, Coast Guard and FEMA workers to work without pay and prompting airlines to warn of longer wait times for Fort Myers visitors during the busy spring travel season.  ABC7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lee Health doctors have reported newborns with unexplained withdrawal symptoms linked to mothers’ kratom use and are advising pregnant women to be cautious; meanwhile, lawmakers are considering new rules to restrict the potent synthetic compound 7-OH (found in kratom) that has raised safety concerns.  ABC7

  • An 8-year-old from Cape Coral qualified for the UCI BMX World Championship in Australia in January at his local BMX park (a popular training spot). His family is seeking community support to cover training costs as he prepares to compete internationally.  Fox 4
