COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A powerful Northeast blizzard and freezing weather canceled over 2,000 flights nationwide on Tuesday. Florida airports reported about 385 cancellations then and 59 today, and travelers are urged to check airline apps for updates (flight schedules may change as the storm evolves).  The News-Press
  • Lee County leaders are exploring a shared-use trail to connect Fort Myers and North Fort Myers using the new 8-foot-wide sidewalk on the Caloosahatchee Bridge and linking to state networks. A public meeting is held tonight from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Collaboratory downtown for community input.  NBC2

  • Local events span the region this week with the Ag Expo at Mike Greenwell Regional Park (Feb. 26 to Mar. 8), the Cape Coral Burrowing Owl Festival at Rotary Park on Feb. 28, musical shows at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall and community art walks in Fort Myers.  The News-Press
  • Wisteria Tea Room & Café in downtown Fort Myers offers cozy English-style afternoon tea with over 30 blends and homemade treats on a three-tiered tray. Founded 15 years ago and now run by Joy Schwartz, the tea room hosts themed events that celebrate tradition and community.  WINK News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Record-breaking domestic tourism is lifting Fort Myers Beach as local resorts report increased visitors during Presidents' Day weekend and Easter (with Pink Shell Beach Resort hosting up to 700 guests). Final visitor numbers are expected later this spring.  WINK News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A total lunar eclipse with a blood moon effect will light up skies in Fort Myers Tuesday, March 3. NASA says the event starts at 3:44 a.m. ET and lasts about six hours pending clear weather.  The News-Press
  • Marine scientists with the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation built a three-acre oyster reef at the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River about a mile off Shell Point six months ago using ancient shells to filter water and support marine life.  ABC7

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Slick City opened in Fort Myers offering 14 slides, dodgeball courts, and events for all ages, including Home School Social and an 18+ Adult Night. The indoor park will host a sensory-friendly night on March 5 (with dimmed lights and music) and visitors can choose a 90-minute or two-hour pass.  Fox 4

  • Down Payment Resource honored Merri Jo Cowen, CEO of Stellar MLS, with the 2025 Beverly Faull Affordable Housing Leadership Award yesterday for her decades of work expanding access to homeownership. The award includes a $5,000 donation to a housing nonprofit of her choice.  WINK News

  • Boat survivor Nichole Hall, who lost her left leg & part of her hip, and trauma surgeon Dr. Joseph Lewis, who saved her life, threw the first pitch on Saturday at Hammond Stadium at Lee Health Sports Complex as the Twins faced the Red Sox, with Hall mentoring trauma patients.  ABC7
