COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Southwest Florida Women in Construction will hold their inaugural Women in Construction Week Celebration Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 3 at Taberna Ole’ Restaurant on S. Cleveland Ave in Fort Myers & include remarks by Mayor Kevin Anderson and Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter to honor industry leadership.  Cape Coral Breeze
  • On Feb. 26, the Lee County community gathered at Mike Greenwell Regional Park for a ribbon-cutting that launched the 2026 SWFL Ag Expo, which runs through March 8 and features animal exhibits, rides, fair food & live acts including One Man Band and Sky High Skyler.  Florida Weekly
  • ACE Pickleball Club is a new indoor facility that opened in June and offers 12 full courts plus extra warm-up courts for clinics and themed events. Located at 2501 Alessio Drive, it provides a safe venue to play year-round and hosts the APC Championship Series for all skill levels.  WINK News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Fort Myers residents can see a rare planet parade when six planets align at twilight; move to a dark-sky spot (such as those in Lake County and South Florida) to catch Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, though telescopes may be needed for some.  The News-Press
  • Southwest Florida Reading Festival returns downtown on Saturday, Mar. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fort Myers Regional Library campus + featuring guest authors Brad Thor and Ward Larsen. They will unveil their new thriller Cold Zero + which adds a literary spark to the event.  WINK News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The School District of Lee County finished reviewing walkouts at local high schools from Feb. 4-6, disciplining 2,480 students for disruptions - from warnings to suspensions. Superintendent Dr. Carlin said 96 percent of students stayed in class and thanked families for their support.  Cape Coral Breeze
  • The Literacy Council Gulf Coast will host its annual Brunch & Bubbles fundraiser brunch at noon on March 1 at Spanish Wells Golf & Country Club to support free English literacy classes in Southwest Florida. The event honors the nonprofit’s tutoring programs benefiting both adults and children.  ABC7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • FWC reported 15 more manatee deaths in Lee County since last week — most from cold stress and one from a watercraft collision off Fort Myers near a Florida Power & Light plant that has resumed operations after a planned shutdown.  Beach Observer and Beach Bulletin
  • Wildlife officials report that Nile monitor lizards pose a growing threat in Fort Myers and across South Florida, and while humane removal is permitted on private property with landowner permission + local ordinances must be followed, the public should not attempt capture and should report sightings to the FWC.  The News-Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Florida SouthWestern State College Dental Hygiene students will offer free dental care to children aged 3 to 17 on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 8 a.m. to noon at the FSW Lee Campus on College Parkway in Fort Myers, and services include exams, x-rays, cleanings, and sealants on a first-come, first-served basis.  ABC7

  • Estero teen Gianna Clemente will begin her pro golfing career on Thursday, Mar. 5 by teeing off at the Atlantic Beach Classic on Florida’s east coast. She recently secured a sponsorship with Nike and looks forward to a busy season on the Epson Tour.  WGCU
  • On Friday, Feb. 27, Seacrest Country Day defeated Keswick Christian 62-40 to reach the state Final Four for the first time, while ECS beat St. John Neumann 69-31 to secure a state semifinal berth in Jacksonville for their fourth straight season.  The News-Press
  • Lee County law enforcement officers participated in the Special Olympics Torch Run yesterday to raise funds for athlete support, with over 150 officers (from multiple agencies) joining the effort. The run is the second stop and will conclude on May 15 (at Disney's Wide World of Sports).  Fox 4
