  • Seniors in Southwest Florida are sharing homes to manage rising housing costs as new roommate arrangements ease financial stress. Brenda Laird in Lehigh Acres and Gregory Hunt from Fort Myers Beach lead the trend while the Area Agency on Aging prepares a home share program.  WINK News
  • The Southwest Florida Ag Expo runs through Sunday at Mike Greenwell Regional Park in North Fort Myers, offering fair food, rides and live music for local families. The event features competitions, auctions & a Supernatural Santana Tribute today from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.  The News-Press
  • The Fort Myers Beach Library held a record-setting Giant Book Sale last weekend that sold over $4,700 worth of books and other items, marking its first sale since Hurricane Ian.   • On Feb. 15, Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille and Dixie Fish Company employees cleaned Fort Myers Beach as part of the 11th annual beach cleanup by the Tunaskin Beach Keepers Club and Keep Lee County Beautiful; 400 volunteers helped and donations raised $6,000 for local conservation.  Beach Observer and Beach Bulletin

  • The Mucky Duck on Captiva will reopen soon after closing due to hurricane damage in 2024. Owner Andreas Bieri said the award-winning beachfront bar will update its kitchen menu + hire staff at 11546 Andy Rosse Lane while a civil suit over its sunset views continues.  The News-Press

  • The Sanibel Shell Show returns to the island this week after Hurricane Ian to showcase 240 juried exhibits from six countries, with proceeds funding local scholarships and conservation as collectors join the tradition at the Sanibel Community House from March 5 to 7.  The News-Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Sanibel Sea School offers hands-on wildlife education on island beaches and in mangrove forests. Marine science educators lead sessions on seagrass beds and private classes for families, with costs starting at $60 per person and discounts available.  WGCU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A manatee rescue crew is at Orange Harbor getting ready to extricate a subadult male (showing signs of cold stress and a non-healing cut) from the waterway. Law enforcement and wildlife vehicles arrived around 12:50 p.m., and the injured manatee will be moved to SeaWorld Orlando for treatment.  WINK News
  • F23, the mother eagle of the well-loved North Fort Myers nest, has been missing since Friday morning and wildlife officials are monitoring the situation. The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife is on standby & the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will update the public as more details emerge.  WINK News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lee County leaders considered extending the countywide burn ban Tuesday as dry conditions kept wildfire risks high near Fort Myers despite some rainfall. The ban, if extended, would have lasted 30 days with possible seven-day increments if conditions remained risky.  NBC2
  • The Florida House passed a bill (HB 1279) to cap international student enrollment at public universities on March 3; the measure now heads to the Senate and is unlikely to become law as top schools risk losing research funding.  The News-Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • The United Way’s WeCare program delivered over $9.2 million in free care last year through 2,067 encounters and nearly 300 volunteer specialists for over 300 uninsured residents in Lee, Hendry and Glades counties; the program also partnered with 20+ organizations to meet a major dermatology need.  The News-Press
