  • Bimini Basin Seafood & Cocktails opened in Cape Coral near the new Bimini Square development with waterfront views, 225 seats and 30 boat slips. Phelan Family Brands plans to add live music soon as busy happy hour has already drawn eager customers.  The News-Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historians Barbara Puffer, Ellie Bunting and Anita Turner will review Fort Myers Beach faith roots and rebuilding at St. Raphael’s Episcopal Church on Williams Drive Monday, March 9 from 1 to 2 p.m.—discussing Hurricane Ian recovery and future services at St. Peter’s and the Church of the Ascension.  Beach Talk Radio
  • The Alliance for the Arts is hosting Erin Go Ukulele, a St. Patrick’s Day event featuring internationally acclaimed bands Them Uke Boys and Uke 66 on Tuesday, March 17 at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tickets are $25 for members (and $30 for non-members).  Florida Weekly
  • Artworks / Art With Purpose will host a two-evening fundraiser and gallery grand opening benefiting Miles of Smiles Foundation on Saturday, March 7, and Sunday, March 8, from 5-9 p.m. at 17953 San Carlos Blvd., with 10% of all sales supporting veterans services.  Florida Weekly
  • At IMAG History & Science Center, horticulturist Christian, landscaper Kate and greenskeeper Emily launched the Florida-Friendly Landscape Garden to show sustainable UF Extension practices including water saving and mulch use, featuring hidden tiny dinosaurs and a scavenger hunt for kids. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local gas prices in Florida increased by nearly 20 cents from March 2 to 3, reaching about $3.07 per gallon amid concerns over supply disruptions (according to AAA data) from Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz. AAA predicts further rises in coming weeks.  The News-Press
  • Better Together will host a second chance job fair on Tuesday, Mar. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Park Alliance Church (7469 San Carlos Blvd) where over 300 job seekers can meet local employers and resource partners and get free job coaching sessions.  Cape Coral Breeze

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Florida law prohibits touching sea turtles, their nests, or hatchlings during nesting season that began March 1, so beachgoers in Fort Myers must keep a 30-foot distance and call officials if a turtle is in distress. Local ordinances also limit beachfront lighting (including flash photography) to protect these endangered species.  The News-Press
  • Residents near a North Fort Myers condo complex are asking officials to expand the manatee protection zone near Manatee Park after a manatee rescue outside the harbor. Neighbors say extending the zone by half a mile would slow boat speeds + help protect the local manatee population.  WINK News

  • After a flight disruption from Brisbane through Doha, Fort Myers’ Lisa and Darryl Lee remain stranded in Qatar amid regional tensions. The couple is staying at a hotel with provided meals + they await guidance from officials to return home.  WINK News
  • U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins declared a disaster to help Florida farmers after a historic freeze caused over $3.1 billion in crop losses. The move follows bipartisan congressional support + may aid growers statewide, including some near Fort Myers, to plan for recovery.  WGCU

HEALTH NEWS

  • HSS at NCH is using the new OrthoGrid artificial intelligence system to help surgeons improve hip replacement alignment today - the tool captures up to 35 anatomical markers to lower risks and ensure better patient outcomes.  ABC7

  • Canterbury girls soccer won its first state championship with a 1-0 victory over Victory Christian on Feb. 21 in Auburndale. The historic win capped years of rebuilding (bringing pride to local fans).  The News-Press
