ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Fort Myers teen named Jaciey was killed on her way to school in a traffic crash on Gladiolus Drive at 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday — two others including a 30 year old man named Dillon sustained serious injuries when a car did not stop for a red light.  The News-Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dollar General said it will close 96 stores + 45 pOpshelf locations in the coming weeks, with six converting to Dollar General, even as the chain reported a 4.5% sales rise to $40.6 billion; the company has not confirmed if any Florida locations will be affected.  The News-Press
  • Local beachfront restaurants on Fort Myers Beach say this spring break will be the busiest since Hurricane Ian as more visitors and reopened hotels boost business. Some guests face over-hour delays to reach the beach—an inconvenience business owners accept as the island recovers from past hurricane seasons.  NBC2
  • The Mucky Duck in Captiva was named the 7th best beach bar in South by Southern Living even as it remains closed after back-to-back hurricanes damaged it last fall—workers have started repairs though officials have not set a reopening date.  The News-Press

CRIME NEWS

  • A pedestrian died after being struck by a van on Lee Boulevard in Fort Myers Friday morning — police said the victim did not use a crosswalk and the investigation is ongoing.  NBC2

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Starting April 11th, Canadians visiting Fort Myers Beach for over 30 days must register online under new U.S. rules—some visitors say the extra steps may deter them and local officials fear a drop in the 200,000 annual Canadian tourists could slow the local economy.  Fox 4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill called Lucy's Law that would impose stricter boating penalties passed a House panel as lawmakers push for safer boating after the death of 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez two years ago. The measure—making leaving a crash scene a third-degree felony and requiring safety training for boaters—moves to the House Judiciary Committee and could take effect on July 1.  WINK News
