  • Local pitmasters will fire up their smokers at the Barbecue, Bands & Brew fundraising event held at the Caloosa Sound Amphitheater in Fort Myers as live music from Riverside, Soapy Tuna and the Ben Allen Band starts at 11:30 a.m. The Lee Building Industry Association hosts the event which benefits Builders Care for emergency construction services.  WINK News

CRIME NEWS

  • Fort Myers jewelry store owner Greg Cerio said video shows five masked suspects trying to break in on Cleveland and Colonial today but they fled when a bulletproof door held firm—damage to the door and window may cost thousands and officials suspect the same group was involved in earlier break-ins, prompting Cerio to urge anyone with information to contact FMPD.  ABC7

  • Flatlanders is playing at Players Circle Theater on McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers and will run until April 6th—this Southeastern premiere stars real-life couple Kimberly Suskind and Ted Wioneck III, who bring funny energy and surprises that may help couples rethink their relationships.  ABC7

  • Today, local high schools submitted top nominees for Lee County Student of the Week and voting runs until 5 p.m. on April 3—nominations include standout students from Fort Myers High, Ida Baker, Evangelical Christian, and North Fort Myers High recognized for their academics and extracurriculars.  The News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Fort Myers general contracting company sued the city after officials rejected its protest on February 25 regarding the bid process for work on the historic Rachel at the Well project on McGregor Boulevard—alleging that city officials did not follow their own procurement procedures or Florida law. The lawsuit asks a judge to delay any new bids or contract awards until the protest can be properly reviewed.  ABC7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Colorectal cancer — the third most common cancer in the U.S. and a leading cause of cancer deaths — is often preventable with regular screenings that find early changes, and experts say people ages 45 to 75 should adopt healthy habits like exercise and a balanced diet to lower their risk. The Partners in Care Foundation urges local residents to talk with their doctor about the best screening option.  The News-Press
  • Many local gyms offer heated workout classes such as hot yoga, Pilates and spin that range from 85°F to over 100°F—experts say the heat warms muscles and burns extra calories while increasing the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and reduced workout intensity. Doctors advise that these classes do not replace regular exercise routines and that older adults or those with chronic conditions should consult a doctor before joining.  ABC7
