CRIME NEWS

  • Fort Myers police have released a new age progression photo and a voice recording in their search for baby Bryan Dos Santos-Gomes, who was abducted as an infant in December 2006 when a woman in a black SUV pulled out a knife—officials say the recording may help identify her.  ABC7
  • Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers and Gulf Coast Humane Society teamed up to install three new billboards—one on Martin Luther King Boulevard west of Michigan Avenue, one on State Road 80 west of Interstate 75, and one on North U.S. 41 south of Lakeville Drive—to urge residents to report suspected dog fighting or animal abuse by calling 1-800-780-8477.  WINK News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Record Store Day will take place on Saturday, April 12 at four local record shops in Southwest Florida with new hours and special deals. Joe’s Record Exchange in downtown Fort Myers will open at 8:30 a.m. while Stellar Records offers 10% off used LPs, $0.99 bargain records, and free tote bags for the first 25 customers—so local music fans should come early.  WINK News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Audubon’s Everglades Science Center team is asking Florida bird watchers to search for banded Roseate Spoonbills and report sightings using an online form—nearly 3,000 birds have been banded since 2003 so each reported sighting earns a special sticker and helps track the species' population.  WGCU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The bridge connecting Pine Island and Matlacha opened to two lanes on April 4 after FDOT sped up Phase 1 to ease heavy traffic during the snowbird season—further work will continue in a three-phase plan to replace and strengthen the structure.  The News-Press
  • The Town Council of Fort Myers Beach selected five finalists and two alternates for the Town Manager role from 66 candidates and will interview them on Friday, April 18 at 9 a.m. with a public Q&A at 1 p.m.; the town will cover travel expenses as it prepares to replace outgoing Manager Andy Hyatt—who will step down at the end of April.  Beach Observer and Beach Bulletin
  • Fort Myers city leaders are asking for a $300,000 grant from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to fund improvements at Legacy Island Park—adding a boat dock, trails and beaches for paddling. City Council Member Fred Burson said the project will also remove invasive plants and plant mangroves to help local ecosystems—work that was delayed by hurricane damage, a lawsuit and permit issues.  Fox 4
  • At 9 a.m. today, Cape Coral City Council will present an update on the Bimini East demolition project, where 35 of 47 sites have been demolished and 46 are set for demolition by mid-May with the final structure planned for early June. The update will also cover a developers meeting scheduled for early May and a request for proposals by mid-June—contracts for development are expected by year-end—ensuring the city's next steps are clear.  Cape Coral Breeze
