  • The Bobby Nichols-Fiddlesticks Charity Foundation awarded over $1.6 million in grants to six local charities on March 25 to help at-risk children in Southwest Florida, with two partners receiving $575,000 each as part of its 23rd annual Nichols Cup event—raising its total donations to $20 million since 2002.  North Fort Myers Neighbor

CRIME NEWS

  • This afternoon, Nicholas Steven Canfield was sentenced to life in prison after a Lee County jury convicted him of first-degree murder, sexual battery on a child and three counts of aggravated child abuse—he assaulted a 2-year-old he babysat who later died from her injuries.  Cape Coral Breeze
  • John Barnett, whose wife Stephanie was murdered at their Lehigh Acres home between Monday night and Tuesday morning, said he found her blood-covered body alongside his teenage daughter after a 23-year-old man named Lukas Carlton allegedly slit her throat and fled on Interstate 75—Carlton remains in custody in Pasco County as he awaits extradition to Lee County.  WINK News
  • A South Florida man was arrested today after officers found two kilos of fentanyl during a traffic stop near Colonial Boulevard on Interstate 75 in south Fort Myers—James Pitts, 39, from Broward County, is linked to a network trafficking fentanyl from the East Coast to Lee County.  NBC2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews have started installing over 500 turtle-friendly light poles (replacing those lost after Hurricane Ian) along major roads like Estero Boulevard to improve night safety on Fort Myers Beach. The town says the project will be completed by November so that residents and visitors can see better at night.  NBC2
  • Today, Fort Myers community leaders and city officials watched a demonstration on assembling Tiger Dam flood barriers as hurricane season nears—US Flood Control showed how three 50-foot tubes, each weighing over 10,000 pounds, can quickly create a flood protection wall with teamwork and proper anchoring.
