COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Fort Myers Beach Woman's Club Spirit Night will take place at Hammond Stadium on Saturday, Apr. 18, with gates opening at 5 p.m. and the first pitch at 6:05 p.m. — each ticket donates $5 to the club.  Beach Talk Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Fort Myers Seafood & Music Festival returns this weekend at Centennial Park (2000 West First St.) with free admission. Organized by Paragon Festivals with the River District Alliance, the three-day event features live music, fresh seafood and a curated marketplace with local arts.  Cape Coral Breeze

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce reported 1,290 of 1,699 hotel rooms reopened on the beach after Hurricane Ian, with Margaritaville adding 254 rooms. Two hotels remain closed + one is set to reopen later this year while 19 hotels were destroyed, losing 590 rooms.  Beach Talk Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lee County experienced 58 manatee deaths in February from cold stress linked to a delay in restoring warm water after the Fort Myers power plant outage + experts say a review of emergency heat protocols is underway to better protect the animals during future cold snaps.  WINK News
  • Colorado State University forecasted 13 named storms for the season beginning June 1, and Florida faces a 74% chance of a storm passing within 50 miles of its coast; residents are urged to review preparedness plans as tropical activity builds.  The News-Press
  • Florida is in a severe drought, and state officials warn that wildfires may become active from April through June. Residents are urged to prepare defensible zones & follow local burn restrictions to protect their homes.  The News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida’s minimum wage for non-tipped employees will rise to $15 on Sept. 30, 2026 after a constitutional amendment passed in 2020; tipped workers will see their rate increase to $11.98 while future rises will adjust with inflation.  The News-Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Anglers will compete for Florida's prized tarpon at the South Seas Tarpon Tournament on May 22 at the South Seas resort (north tip of Captiva). Sponsored by the Lee County Bar Association, the contest falls during the peak migratory season.  The News-Press
  • Local baseball and softball teams are gearing up for district play starting next week. Updated rankings show Canterbury leading baseball and Bishop Verot topping softball among competitive SWFL squads.  The News-Press
