  • Decorated Vietnam veteran and former Vice Mayor Joe Kozinski was honored with the Quilt of Valor at Fort Myers Beach Library Saturday. He was recognized for his military service (including work saving lives on 9/11) and his efforts to help residents rebuild after hurricanes.  Beach Talk Radio

  • Downtown House of Pizza in Fort Myers was named best pizza in Lee County by The News-Press on April 13 and will launch a new breakfast menu at 7-11 a.m. seven days a week from April 27 — owner Jason Kohn will reveal another surprise in a few months.  The News-Press

  • Titanic: The Musical debuts at Arts Bonita Actors Theater on April 17 and runs through April 26 — the show blends sweeping music and personal stories inspired by the Titanic while tickets start at $20.  ABC7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Florida gas prices fell 18 cents to $4.016 a gallon on Monday after a U.S. Navy blockade began in the Strait of Hormuz at 10 a.m. on April 13 & oil prices jumped above $100 a barrel following failed talks with Iran.  The News-Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida school districts set the last day of classes for the 2025-2026 school year between May 22 (for some counties) and June 4 (for others), with schools in session closed on Memorial Day, May 25; some counties also began spring break on April 13.  The News-Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After a vehicle struck a two-year-old Florida panther in Fort Myers, rescuers from South Florida Wildlands Association & ZooTampa treated its fractured front right leg. The animal will serve as an ambassador for its species at ZooTampa.  WINK News
  • Local officials urge residents to prepare for hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, by building emergency kits and checking evacuation zones on official websites.   • Captiva Erosion Control District invites property owners to join a free program to remove invasive Australian pines and green iguanas from Captiva, aiming to protect dunes and native wildlife. The removal program, funded by a six-figure grant, will run until June 30 or until funds run out.  WGCU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local Social Security recipients should note that payments are scheduled by birthday groups, with those born between the 11th and 20th receiving their check tomorrow on April 15 and those who began benefits before May 1997 having been paid on April 3; SSI checks come on the first business day of each month.  The News-Press
  • The Lee County School Board will hire Robert Dodig as board attorney today, with his contract running from April 15 until June 30, 2029 at $220,000 a year plus benefits — the board will soon fill a new chief staff attorney position to advise the superintendent.  WGCU

  • The Town of Fort Myers Beach has issued a boil water notice for properties along Estero Blvd, advising residents and businesses to boil water for one minute before use. Affected locations include Ocean Harbor Condominium, Publix, Snook Bight Marina, and Junkanoo’s (4745-4791 Estero Blvd).  NBC2
