  • Florida Gulf Coast University broke ground on Marieb Hall South, a $117 million health sciences building set to open by spring; the new facility will offer immersive simulation — including virtual reality and AI-enhanced training — to equip students for clinical work.  NBC2

  • Evacuations remain in effect for a 1,733-acre brush fire in the Picayune Strand State Forest south of I-75 as emergency crews and extra dozers from Central Florida work to contain the flames & ensure safe travel in the area.  NBC2

  • Motorists encountered a new pedestrian hybrid beacon west of Ben Street that became fully operational at 9 p.m. Wednesday to help pedestrians cross higher-speed roads + drivers are advised to exercise caution.  WGCU
  • Lee County announced that the free tram will run its final route on Fort Myers Beach Wednesday, April 22 as the busy season ends. The service, funded by TDC + county funds, has helped visitors get around easily.  Beach Talk Radio
  • The Rotary Club of Fort Myers South named five finalists for the 2026 Officer of the Year Award - officers come from the Sheriff's Office, Fort Myers Police, Port Authority and Cape Coral Police - with the winner announced at the Law and Order Ball on Saturday, Apr. 18.  The News-Press
