CRIME NEWS

  • A Cape Coral man was arrested Monday afternoon in Fort Myers after leading police on a high-speed chase and being found with synthetic drugs & a 9mm handgun; he faces charges for controlled substance possession and fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement.  ABC7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nominees for the Lee County High School Student of the Week competition for April 21-24 have been announced and voting is open until 5 p.m. on April 24. Genesis Gomez of North Fort Myers High School, Taylor Davison of Evangelical Christian School, and Sara Huda of Fort Myers High School are recognized for academic and extracurricular achievements—voters are invited to select their favorite.  The News-Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • To celebrate Earth Day 2025, The Pink Shell Resort is hosting a beach cleanup today at 7 a.m. Volunteers should notify parking attendants at the resort and will be provided bags, trash bins and pickers+it is recommended that they bring gloves.  Beach Talk Radio
  • A night camera recorded Florida panther 267 giving birth to two kittens last year and shows that at least one kitten is still following its mother.  The News-Press

  • Melanie Roff, 63, of North Fort Myers won $1 million on a Florida Lottery 500X The Cash scratch-off ticket purchased at Brothers Petroleum XI Inc. on April 17 and chose a one-time, lump-sum payment of $640,000— the store earned a $2,000 bonus for the sale.  The News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lee County Utilities issued a precautionary boil water notice for about 580 residences along Orange River Boulevard from 9701 to 10271 after a contractor damaged a water main—customers currently do not have water. Repairs were expected to be completed Monday afternoon and residents must boil water for drinking, cooking, and brushing teeth until tests confirm safety—officials expect the notice to lift Thursday afternoon.  WINK News

  • The Florida Department of Health in Lee County invites Fort Myers residents to a Community Health Fair on Saturday, April 26 at the DOH-Lee Michigan Clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair offers free or low-cost health screenings, car seat checks, free car seat distribution, + fun activities like face painting and a chance to see a fire truck.  City of Fort Myers Beach
