- ➤ On Saturday, families played Putt-Putt for Pets at Congo River Golf and donated 4,022 pounds of pet food to help local animal rescues in Fort Myers and Naples — the event was part of 96.9 WINK-FM’s year-round Pet Project that attracted mini-golfers from Venice, Port Charlotte and North Port. - ➤ The Cape Coral Animal Shelter introduced a centralized resource hub that offers standard operating procedures, best practice protocols, human resources guidelines, adoption procedures, training resources and job descriptions to help shelters and clinics work together. - ➤ Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife will run its fifth annual Burrowing Owl Photo Contest starting May 1 and will accept one photo per amateur entry with only minor editing allowed (no professional submissions). - ➤ Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a welfare check at Forest Country Club after deputies responded to a home on Bobcat Drive at 1 a.m.—a verbally aggressive man pointed his gun at them, leading one deputy to fire a round that did not injure anyone before subduing him with a less-than-lethal round. - ➤ Charter captain Brock Horner was arrested in Punta Gorda days after a viral video showed him yelling at a fisherman, and further investigations by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission revealed additional violations from his March 29 trip—operating without a valid saltwater charter license and using an improperly registered vessel, which led to two new citations and another misdemeanor charge. - ➤ On April 25, the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools honored six teachers at its 38th annual Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Banquet held at Caloosa Sound Convention Center in downtown Fort Myers.
