ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An 11-year-old girl drowned at Little Hickory Beach in Bonita Springs on Sunday night despite rescue efforts by fire rescue and Lee County deputies—water safety advocates now urge families to assign a water watcher and check for rip currents before entering the water.  ABC7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fringe Fort Myers 2025 returns next month starting May 29 with nine shows at two main venues—Foulds Theatre at Alliance for the Arts and Off Broadway Palm at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre. The festival opens with a 5 p.m. Flamingle reception where artists pitch their shows in short, exciting presentations.  WGCU
  • This week, equity and community theaters from Sarasota to Marco Island host several shows—some open, some close and others continue their runs.   • Better Together is hosting the Nationwide Day of Second Chances job fair today at Riverside Church at 8660 Daniels Parkway to help job seekers facing barriers such as homelessness and resume gaps — including free coaching sessions, haircuts, and clothing — as over 100 employers are expected to interview and potentially offer jobs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  WGCU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials warn that the May 7 REAL ID deadline is fast approaching as federal law requires travelers to meet specific document standards. Florida residents should check with local services to see if they can apply online or need to visit in person—alternatives like passports remain acceptable for domestic travel.  The News-Press
  • Lee County announced that residents in Pine Island, Matlacha, North Fort Myers, Fort Myers Shores, Alva, Lehigh Acres, South Fort Myers, Iona, the Village of Estero and Bonita Springs must set out trash, recycling and yard waste by 5:30 a.m. starting Thursday. The one-hour earlier schedule will help contracted haulers complete routes earlier due to summer heat while the regular collection day remains unchanged.  WINK News

  • Normal is Overrated 2025 is an event for young people to speak openly about mental health—this year it will help them share personal challenges and discuss the support they have received. It will be held on Saturday, May 3rd from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Florida Southwestern State College in Fort Myers and will raise funds for mental health services at Golisano Children’s Hospital and Lee Health.  WGCU
