  • On Tuesday, the Gulf Coast Humane Society showcased Coco Chanel, a 5-year-old, 69-pound mixed-breed dog ready for adoption at its facility on 2010 Arcadia St; adopters should note she requires regular grooming to keep her thick coat healthy, and fees for dogs over 40 pounds are half off.  ABC7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fort Myers Dinner Theatre will produce its first play, 'James and the Giant Peach,' in July at its new venue off Crystal Drive & US 41. A gala preview on June 13 will let local residents see the space before the show.  WGCU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fort Myers Police Department is hosting Respect For Law Camp at Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School from June 11-14 for kids aged 10-14. The camp offers hands-on lessons in fire safety, CPR, internet safety and team building while connecting participants with local public safety professionals for a $125 registration fee.  ABC7
  • Florida SouthWestern State College will hold three graduation ceremonies on Friday, May 1 at Suncoast Credit Union Arena where over 3,000 graduates celebrate at 9 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 4 p.m. Graduates must pick up guest tickets ahead of their ceremony & follow strict security and bag policies.  Cape Coral Breeze

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • As bears wake from hibernation, FWC warned residents today to secure outdoor attractants to avoid conflicts. Officials advise using bear-resistant trash solutions (and removing pet food) to reduce encounters.  WINK News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • FEMA allocated $41 million for flood mitigation projects along the Gulf Coast—$3 million is set for Fort Myers to fund backup power systems and engineering projects to reduce downtown flooding. Local business leaders say the measures will help prepare the city for future storms.  ABC7
  • Lee County Parks & Recreation will improve the Punta Rassa Boat Ramp with a concrete block mat to curb erosion from boat loading & unloading. Work starts after a barge arrives May 6 and lasts four weeks, temporarily closing the center dock and one ramp side while parking remains open.  WGCU

HEALTH NEWS

  • SiPhox Health now offers Fort Myers residents an at-home blood testing kit that uses the EasyDraw device to collect samples in five minutes & sends them for CLIA-certified analysis, with results shown on a personalized digital dashboard. The service tests up to 60 biomarkers and starts at $99 for new members.  The News-Press
  • 83-year-old Fort Myers resident Don Sholley began riding his recumbent bike after his doctor warned him of diabetes risk and obesity; in 16 months he logged 3,368 miles and lost 70 pounds. He plans to ride 2,400 more miles to Honolulu within the next year.  WINK News

  • World-class women's tennis is underway in Bonita Bay, featuring a $100,000 purse that attracts top talent & supports local health initiatives including donations to Lee Health Cancer Center; organizers say the event is one of the best-run on the USTA Pro Circuit and it runs through May 4.  ABC7
