COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 1, the weekly Grocery Shopping Poll asked local shoppers to report pricing errors on their receipts. Readers were invited to participate via email or an interactive tool (SW Florida) to support local journalism.  The News-Press
  • Jaycee Park in Cape Coral reopened Thursday, April 30 after a $12 million renovation that took over a year – it now offers a new bandshell, splash pad, playground, and boardwalk views for families.  The News-Press
  • Letter carriers in Florida will pick up non-perishable food on May 9 & deliver it to local food pantries to help combat hunger. Residents can support the drive by leaving a bag by their mailbox.  The News-Press
  • Collaboratory marked its 50th anniversary on May 1 with a celebration that honored nearly $150 million in grants awarded since 1976 and launched a $250,000 matching challenge from the Philos Foundation to boost the SWFL Resilience Fund. The foundation continues to support scholarships and community projects across the region.  The News-Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The School District of Lee County held a news conference on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Fort Myers to discuss proposed budget cuts with Superintendent Denise Carlin and Florida Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas co-leading the briefing.  ABC7
  • Four Gateway Charter School students won awards at the state Invention Convention and will head to the U.S. Nationals from June 3-5 in Dearborn (their third national appearance reflecting the school’s strong STEAM focus).  Cape Coral Breeze
  • The new FGCU Deep Tech Club, led by president Mia Mellor, plans to launch two 12-foot rockets by late September for research on payload issues — it has also applied to send a project to the International Space Station by spring.  WGCU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lee County Utilities lifted the water boil notice for 1,600 homes + 22 businesses in North Fort Myers after installing a new 12-inch water valve and replacing a section of water pipe, and bacterial testing confirmed the drinking water is safe.  WINK News
  • Governor Ron DeSantis held a press conference at Fort Myers High School at 9:30 a.m. Friday with Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas in attendance. The event offered community members updated insights on education matters.  ABC7

HEALTH NEWS

  • FC Naples team doctor Dr. Bryan Hanyspiak will lead a free sports injury prevention workshop for young athletes on May 7 at the Pine Ridge location, where players like Max Glasser will join kids for a meet-and-greet after the event.  WINK News
