CULTURE NEWS

  • Gulfshore Ballet will perform 'Don Quixote' at Tribby Arts Center at Shell Point on Saturday, May 9 at 7 p.m. The three-act ballet is based on Cervantes’ novel and features stunning choreography + Spanish-inspired music for an evening of theatrical magic.  WGCU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lee County Parks and Recreation invites families with special-needs children to Camp Sunshine and Camp All Star at the Karl J. Drews Community Center from June 15 to July 31; the camps run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., cost $85 per week + offer fun programs.  Beach Talk Radio
  • The Lee County School District ends the 2025-26 school year on June 1 (one of six Florida counties finishing in June) while Madison County and Miami-Dade mark their last days on May 21 and June 4, respectively.  The News-Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A wildfire burned 9.149 acres along Highway 41 in Everglades National Park and was fully contained Saturday — officials added that temporary closures for US 41 and local trails have been lifted.  WGCU
  • Florida Gulf Coast University professor Dr. Jo Muller has published a study on Atlantic tropical cyclone fatalities from 1963 to 2024 in a searchable database. The research shows most deaths are from water causes + it aims to help emergency managers warn inland residents.  WGCU

FINANCE NEWS

  • Homeowners in Fort Myers face rising insurance premiums even as rates have fallen across Florida, with some paying more than double their previous bills since 2022. Officials warn that this trend may continue as insurers adjust to market pressures.  The News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Daniels Parkway is getting a historic makeover that began yesterday with $3 million in intersection improvements at Treeline Avenue including new lane setups, traffic signals, and erosion control measures. FDOT is also building a $42.8 million Diverging Diamond Interchange and Lee County will extend Three Oaks Parkway — projects set to finish later this year and in Spring 2028.  The News-Press
  • Hurricane Preparedness Week runs from May 3 to May 9, urging South Florida residents to prepare as high hurricane risk looms. Officials advise creating an emergency plan and supply kit (water, food, battery-powered radio, and first aid) while checking state maps to confirm evacuation zones.  The News-Press
