COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roberto Clemente Park in Fort Myers is being upgraded with a new playground and amphitheater for the Dunbar community while construction noise will last until November. The $1.7 million project, backed by a $1 million state grant, will be completed by the end of 2025—aiming to give local families a safer, closer park space.  WINK News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sanibel Captiva Community Bank purchased the historic Edison Theatre building on Hendry Street to serve as its downtown branch and will continue leasing the upper floors—bank president Kyle DeCicco said the move shows the bank’s commitment to preserving Fort Myers’ heritage and supporting the local business community—reinforcing its ongoing investment in the area.  NBC2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 3, FGCU held its graduation ceremony at Alico Arena in Fort Myers—over 2,000 students received degrees from colleges including Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, and Health and Human Services. Of 2,484 eligible graduates, 2,081 registered for the event—demonstrating broad participation in the commencement.  The News-Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission says private landowners may humanely shoot Burmese pythons on their property if they use proper methods (such as a firearm or captive bolt to ensure immediate unconsciousness and brain destruction). The invasive snakes have harmed local wildlife and can be killed immediately on private property or FWC managed lands when spotted.  The News-Press

  • On May 5, Hurricane Preparedness Week focused on steps for residents to ready themselves before the season begins—advising people to gather supplies, verify insurance, plan evacuations, and fortify their homes. NOAA and the National Hurricane Center stressed that early preparation will help families when the season starts on June 1.  The News-Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lee Health Heart Institute announced that it had the highest number of accepted abstracts at the American College of Cardiology Conference held in Chicago from March 29th to March 31st—marking its second consecutive year of record submissions. The twelve presentations by its team focused on new ways to improve heart care and will help guide future treatment in Southwest Florida.  Cape Coral Breeze
  • Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida is offering free and low-cost birth control at its Fort Myers and Naples Health Centers since May 1 using grant support and local donations — patients pay a $20 consultation fee and up to a $200 fee for long-acting methods.
