EDUCATION NEWS

  • The School District of Lee County is seeking federal funds to upgrade outdated intercom systems at 57 schools and install secure entry vestibules to protect nearly 57,000 students and 11,400 staff. The district requests $7 million for intercom updates and $10,050,000 for vestibule installations as part of a $23.4 million project, and Ballard Partners expects a December timeline for the full appropriations package.  Cape Coral Breeze

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers and five city staff in Cape Coral planted about 600 red mangroves along the South Spreader Waterway last weekend to boost wildlife habitat and lessen storm surge damage—future events are set for June 7, June 28, and Aug. 2.  Cape Coral Breeze
  • Residents in the McGregor Reserve neighborhood reported a black bear roaming near a cemetery along Colonial Boulevard and Summerlin Drive Friday morning — local authorities, including the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, were alerted. Officials say this sighting is separate from a fatal bear encounter in Collier County that happened Tuesday — further updates will follow.  WINK News
  • On May 9, Hurricane Preparedness Week warned residents to stay alert after a storm, noting that nearly half of hurricane deaths occur after a storm and urging people to wait for official clearance before returning home and to clean up carefully to avoid hazards such as dangerous downed power lines+ indoor generator risks. Officials added that hurricane season will start on June 1 and daily tropical outlooks will begin on May 15.  The News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lee County approved buying Mullock Creek Marina in South Fort Myers and will demolish existing structures once the purchase is finalized in September — plans include adding parking and repairing the ramp with a reopening expected in 2026.  WINK News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida SouthWestern State College baseball returned to the state Final Four after a comeback season that saw the Buccaneers overcome a loss to Pensacola State and a doubleheader defeat at Eastern Florida by winning 13 of their last 15 games to clinch the Citrus Conference championship. The team, now 41–14 and ranked sixth nationally, opened the tournament on Friday at 1 p.m. at Charlotte Sports Park — and they are three wins away from reaching their first JUCO World Series.  ABC7
  • World boxing champion Tiara Brown won her title in a March fight in Australia and then returned to Fort Myers to lead the boxing program at the local Police Athletic League where she teaches young fighters. Brown, a three-time national champion with a perfect record, plans to open her own boxing gym and may soon fight for an IBF unification title+ as she continues to lift her community through sport.  The News-Press
