  • Fort Myers hosts a weekend with the City of Palms Dog Show Cluster starting tomorrow in North Fort Myers + FGCU presenting its new k20 Kindness Without Borders Summit on Friday and Saturday at its Water School, while the Film Festival screens films at venues until Sunday, May 24.  The News-Press
  • Gulf Coast Humane Society brought energetic, 2-year-old mixed-breed dog Krampus into the studio Tuesday during its clear the shelter event. The 42-pound working dog needs an active owner and is available for adoption at 2010 Arcadia St. in Fort Myers with his fee reduced to $25.  ABC7
  • Evening at the Ballpark raised $160K for Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County on March 18 at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, drawing 225 guests for baseball-themed activities, silent auctions, and player autographs to support youth programs.  Cape Coral Breeze
  • At its 29th Annual United Way Fishing Tournament on May 12 at D and D Matlacha Bait and Tackle (3922 Pine Island Road N.W.), LCEC raised nearly $85,000 for United Way of Lee, Hendry and Glades counties as 79 boats and over 240 anglers competed.  The News-Press

  • Laurel Blackburn, a Lee County regional math coach for 22 schools, is one of five finalists for the 2027 Florida Teacher of the Year. The winner will be announced in July + chosen from over 170,000 teachers.  WGCU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation announced a record-breaking bald eagle nesting season on Monday, May 12, across Sanibel and Captiva, with 13 eaglets successfully fledged — four nests on Sanibel and three on Captiva. The foundation will work with volunteers this fall for the 2026-27 season.  ABC7

  • Drivers in South Fort Myers face new traffic patterns as construction reshapes Fiddlesticks Boulevard with a roundabout for the Three Oaks Parkway extension, set to open Friday & the I-75/Daniels Parkway interchange is becoming a diverging diamond. County crews expect overall improvements to ease congestion by spring 2028.  ABC7
  • The Fort Myers Beach Local Planning Agency voted 5-2 today to reject London Bay Development Group's plan to build a multi-tower hotel and condo on the former Outrigger site after neighbors raised concerns about height and density; developers will seek approval from the Town Council.  Beach Observer and Beach Bulletin

  • Local golfers kept playing at Fort Myers Country Club despite rising fees last month. On April 14, players like John Regina and Andy Gonta showed that many still value the sport + club rates have sparked local discussion.  The News-Press
  • The 14th annual Ding Darling & Doc Ford’s Tarpon Tournament will take place this weekend to raise funds for Sanibel’s J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge & support conservation.
