ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 71-year-old Lehigh Acres man died when a van struck him while he tried to cross Lee Boulevard near Lehigh Regional Medical Center (6:20 a.m.) on May 15 (close to Hazelwood Avenue South), and the crash remains under investigation.  The News-Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tap 42 Craft Kitchen & Bar— the chain's 12th location and only one with a rooftop bar— opened at Bell Tower on May 14 with upscale decor and a menu of contemporary American cuisine. The rooftop opens at 5:30 p.m. from Wednesday to Saturday and will feature live music.  The News-Press
  • SWFL Inc. hosted the sold-out 2025 INCredible Awards at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point where local business leaders and community partners gathered to honor those boosting Southwest Florida's success. EDUCATION NEWS

  • DHHC will begin a free 12-week American Sign Language course for nonverbal individuals on the autism spectrum and their families on Tuesday, May 20, with classes held weekly from 6 to 7 p.m. at 1860 Boy Scout Drive B208 in Fort Myers — other participants will be charged $125 and earn a Certificate of Accomplishment upon completion.  North Fort Myers Neighbor

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fort Myers officials are replanting palm trees along major boulevards to restore the City of Palms image nearly three years after Hurricane Ian removed many of these trees. The city has planted 70 palms on Palm Beach Boulevard and 118 on McGregor Boulevard with funding from an Ian recovery grant and city beautification funds.  WINK News
  • Cane toads are returning to Southwest Florida and the state agency now allows landowners to hunt the poisonous invaders—Dave Fox from Silverlakes Gateway has caught 600 toads over four years to protect pets. His work helps keep local dogs and cats safe from the toads’ harmful toxin.  WINK News

  • New Town Manager Will McKannay will be sworn in Monday at the Fort Myers Beach Town Council meeting to replace Andy Hyatt after his unanimous selection on April 18. Former Army Commander from Fort Riley — McKannay will lead on a 2-year contract paying $200,000 per year with up to $22,500 for relocation funds as he supports the town through council recalls, legal challenges and a slow recovery after Hurricane Ian.  Beach Talk Radio

  • National Safe Boating Week will run from May 17 to May 23 to remind local boaters to inspect safety gear, take classes, and follow best practices as summer nears — Flotilla 9-6 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer exhibits, classes, and patrols in Lee and Collier counties to boost boating safety for residents.  North Fort Myers Neighbor
