CRIME NEWS

  • A Fort Myers man, Levi Ross Jr., 46, was arrested by the Lee County Sheriff's Office after allegedly robbing the Royal Arcade on South Cleveland Avenue with a mask and shooting an employee’s hand — deputies later tased him during a foot pursuit in Pine Manor and recovered a hidden firearm — and he now faces charges including robbery with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest.  ABC7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mariner High School held its graduation ceremony on May 18 at Alico Arena at Florida Gulf Coast University—439 seniors received their diplomas during the event.  The News-Press
  • South Fort Myers High School Class of 2025 graduated May 18 at Suncoast Credit Union Arena—Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers. They joined thousands of Lee County students during a graduation season that showcased the school's Wolfpack spirit and its red, black and white colors, with the school founded in 2005.  The News-Press
  • Fort Myers High School held its graduation ceremony on May 18 at Alico Arena with about 469 seniors earning their diplomas. The graduates joined thousands from the Lee County School District in celebrating the Class of 2025 in a memorable event.  The News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fort Myers Beach town officials will swear in new manager William McKannay today after his contract was approved last week amid the resignation of former town manager Andrew Hyatt—who left after receiving abusive messages and death threats over a controversial project.  ABC7
  • William McKannay will be sworn in today as Fort Myers Beach's new town manager, replacing Andy Hyatt who stepped down amid threats linked to a controversial development project on the site of the old Red Coconut. City council will meet at 9 a.m. to review another beach project, with developer Terry Persot saying changes were made based on community input & residents focused on preserving the island’s look after Hurricane Ian.  WINK News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Florida Everblades lost the first two Eastern Conference Finals games to the Trois-Rivières Lions with scores of 1-0 on Saturday and 2-1 on Sunday at Hertz Arena—leaving them down 0-2. Game 3 will be played May 21 at 7 p.m. in the Province of Québec—Florida will regroup and try to reverse the series trend.  The News-Press
  • The Florida Everblades lost 2-1 in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Sunday at Hertz Arena, falling behind the Trois-Rivières Lions who now lead the series 2–0. Game 3 is scheduled for May 21 at Colisée Vidéotron—puck drop is set for 7 p.m.  ABC7
  • Bishop Verot is set to face Miami Springs in the Class 3A state semifinal at 1 p.m. today at Lee Health Sports Complex—Verot holds a 32-2 record while Miami Springs, at 26-3, backs its performance with strong pitching that allows just 1.3 runs per game.  The News-Press
