  • As summer nears, local officials urge boaters to refresh their safety gear during National Safe Boating Week from May 17 to May 23. Flotilla 9-6 of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer safety classes, vessel checks, and an open house at Cocohatchee River Park in Naples to help keep boaters safe on the water & ensure all passengers wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets.  North Fort Myers Neighbor

  • The Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 65 year old Ernest Charles Hannah drowned over the weekend at a Fort Myers golf course lake along 2241 Palo Duro Blvd.—he fell in after a small john boat he used for maintenance pulled away from the shore and medics could not revive him.  WINK News

  • The 15th Annual Fort Myers Film Festival ended Sunday night with winners in 11 categories including Best Feature Film for 'Curveballs' by John Biffar, Best Documentary for 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin', and Audience Favorite for 'Sanibel: The Hurricane Diaries'—honors that recognized standout films in both feature and individual contests.  WGCU

  • Calusa Waterkeeper announced on May 15th that Joe Cavanaugh began his new role to protect the Caloosahatchee River from Lake Okeechobee to Lee County's coastal waters.   • Joe Cavanaugh was named as the new Calusa Waterkeeper to protect and restore the Caloosahatchee River from Lake Okeechobee to the coastal waters of Lee County.   • Terry Persaud pulled his revised 30-room hotel proposal from the Fort Myers Beach Town Council meeting after a 3-hour public hearing raised questions about the project's public benefit and its size on 0.5 acres—he now plans to go back to the drawing board with a new proposal.  Beach Talk Radio

  • Peter Frank, a 23-year-old Michigan man, nearly canoed 3,000 miles from Canada to Fort Myers in 11 months using only a canoe, tent, and fishing rod to brave harsh weather and isolation. After arriving Monday, he will paddle back to Canada today in a historic clockwise circumnavigation—following the same route first completed 45 years ago.  ABC7
