  • Local experts advise residents to build hurricane supplies kits on a budget — they recommend using household items like tap water, canned food, batteries, and flashlights to be ready when a storm hits as hurricane season nears.  The News-Press
  • South Seas Resort will host its expanded Tarpon Tournament Memorial Day weekend fundraiser for Folds of Honor — featuring a Captain’s Meeting on May 21, competitive fishing on May 22, and a Golf Scramble on May 23 — to raise scholarship funds for families of fallen and disabled service members.  North Fort Myers Neighbor
  • Fort Myers Beach Community Foundation held its recent meeting and awarded $75K to local organizations plus provided scholarships to 21 college students with beach ties.   • Sweet Tomatoes reopened its Fort Myers location in a soft opening on May 18 at 14080 S. Tamiami Trail, between Volkswagen and Lexus dealerships. The restaurant, now under new ownership, offers limited seating while staff train for its grand opening.  The News-Press
  • Steve's Place in North Fort Myers has new owners (Rachael Kennedy and Angie Cook) who will keep the classic menu—including The Hoosier sandwich—and retain the current staff while planning to expand breakfast hours once more help is hired.  The News-Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Camp IMAG at IMAG History and Science Center is offering a 10-week summer program for rising first- through fifth-graders with hands-on science, history, and creative activities running 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily (optional care before and after camp is available with scholarships supporting participation).  WINK News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Southwest Florida’s eagle cam star E26 fledged from its Bayshore Road nest after nearly four months of care by its parents — leaving the nest empty. M15 now awaits a mate to revive the cam that has kept local fans watching.  North Fort Myers Neighbor
  • The 2026 Python Challenge was announced on May 19 and will run from July 10 to July 19 in the Everglades. Drought may impede hunters because Burmese pythons are harder to track when water lines recede + rains that began May 15 may ease conditions closer to the event.  The News-Press

  • Florida Highway Patrol officers will enforce Operation Dry Streets from Friday, May 22 through Sunday, May 24 to keep local roads safe this Memorial Day weekend.   • Lee County Mosquito Control says months of drought have created extra egg banks that could cause a surge in mosquitoes as the rainy season ramps up. Officials are already deploying helicopters to treat coastal areas with larvicide Natular and advise residents to remove any standing water from their yards.  WINK News
