- ➤ A 14-year-old boy was killed while riding his bike along Palm Beach Boulevard in Fort Myers yesterday when a car struck him, leaving family, teachers and community members mourning his loss as a memorial with candles and balloons was set up at the scene (police noted he was not wearing a helmet and speed was not a factor). - ➤ Crumbl Cookies opened its new Fort Myers store at 8 a.m. on March 8 — offering about 200 cookie flavors such as blueberry cheesecake and buckeye brownie. The shop operates Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to midnight — located at 7925 Dani Dr. ABC7
- ➤ MK Architecture was awarded a contract by KILKAM, LLC for a 12,810-square-foot indoor recreation facility on Burnt Store Road next to the new Seedlings Academy, with construction set to begin later this year. Southwest Florida International Airport handled 1,178,980 passengers in April — a 4% increase from last year — nominations for the 2025 Industry Appreciation Awards are open until June 30, and Sanibel Captiva Community Bank has purchased the historic Edison Theatre building at 1533 Hendry St. to continue its downtown branch services. - ➤ Fort Myers man Jorge Garza, 19, was arrested May 22 for battery after he reportedly tackled and punched two children near the Millennium Apartment complex on Three Oaks Parkway—he was released on a $20,000 bond and faces arraignment on June 23. The News-Press

- ➤ Julia Johansson, a third-grade teacher at Caloosa Elementary, was honored last Friday with the New Teacher of the Year Award—presented by Superintendent Dr. Denise Carlin—for her caring and effective teaching. - ➤ Immokalee High School students celebrated their graduation at Alico Arena on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers on May 23 — family and friends attended the ceremony. The News-Press
- ➤ South Fort Myers graduate Giovani Patel earned more than $1M in scholarships and will study pre-med at UF—he said a promise to his sixth-grade teacher and his mother's hard work after losing his father kept him on track. His feat comes after years of effort both in academics and athletics at South Fort Myers High School. WINK News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The first green sea turtle nest of the season was found on Sanibel Island on Friday by the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation, which set up special cages to protect the eggs from predators. The nest belongs to Dellora, a turtle that has nested there several times since 2017, and her eggs will hatch in about 60 days—visitors are urged to help protect the nests by filling holes, turning off lights, and properly disposing of trash. - ➤ Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission staff closed the boardwalk at Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve today to keep visitors safe while the park stayed open. They hazed the bear away from the boardwalk—and officials will return tomorrow morning to check the site. Fox 4
