  • Melvin Lawson, a 77-year-old double leg amputee who has lived in his Alva home for over 50 years, received help to remodel his bathroom—making it ADA accessible—after a local nursing student identified a safety risk during a home visit. The renovation, completed by Lee BIA Builders Care and Trifecta Construction Solutions, improves his safety and independence at home.  ABC7
  • Experts say residents should now build hurricane supply kits with water, food, and important documents as the forecast predicts an above-average Atlantic hurricane season with 13-19 named storms—six to 10 of which could become hurricanes. Families are urged to create evacuation plans and prepare specialized kits for children and pets—ensuring critical supplies are ready before the season begins.  The News-Press

  • Throughout June, Lovers Key State Park will host free events on June 6, 13, 17, 20 and 21 that explore the park’s history, local wildlife and cultural impact, and visitors can join guided walks, bird strolls, lectures on manatees and junior ranger programs — all events are included with the park’s entry fee.  WGCU
  • Stage 2 Improv is one of nine groups at the 3rd Annual Fringe Fort Myers and will hold a preview show today after the Flamingle reception—followed by performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Foulds Theatre at the Alliance for the Arts. The troupe will offer a classic games show on Friday, a music-driven performance on Saturday, and a Dungeons & Dragons themed act on Sunday.  WGCU

  • Residents of Fort Myers Beach met in an emergency meeting to save Fort Myers Beach Elementary School, which closed twice after hurricanes Ian and Milton struck. Town leaders and parents urged the school district to honor a four-year agreement and rebuild the school before the June 3 workshop — a crucial step for the community.  WINK News
  • The Lee County School District held its first job fair in Bonita Springs to recruit bus drivers for the upcoming school year (aiming to fill 555 positions with 532 already filled) to avoid future bus delays.  WINK News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Captiva Island, a group of Elmira College students led by Associate Professor Kelly Smith are restoring sand dunes—natural barriers against storm surges—by taking measurements and tracking erosion with aerial images. They will work manually through the summer to improve protection for the community.  WINK News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city Board of Adjustments approved a conditional use request for a new Fort Myers Police headquarters at 2150 Fowler Street, and construction will start in February 2026 with a planned move in June 2027—projected overall costs near $139 million and 18% more space than the current facility.  Fox 4
  • Florida is getting ready for an active hurricane season as forecasters predict 13 to 19 named storms starting Sunday and lasting through Nov. 30—Gov. DeSantis said the state has solid emergency plans in place in case FEMA scales back its support. Experts noted that local and state resources will manage responses based on lessons learned from three hurricanes in 2024.  WGCU
