  • Approved conceptual designs for historic McCollum Hall in Dunbar were revealed—plans include a two-story structure with restaurant, music venue, community room, recording studio, rooftop terrace and adjacent office and retail space, with an informal presentation to the Historic Preservation Committee scheduled next month.  WINK News
  • Family Initiative will host a free parent group speaker series on June 13 in Cape Coral at its Golisano Autism Community Hub from 1:30 to 3 p.m. — local experts will share hurricane and emergency preparedness tips for families and caregivers.  Cape Coral Breeze
  • Nearly 60 children in Golden Gate enjoyed a new playground at St. Matthew’s House Wolfe Apartments after homebuilder GL Homes donated $50,000 for the equipment. Community leaders, residents, and supporters held a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a community dinner where children played and laughed *joyfully*.  ABC7

  • The Fort Myers Film Festival ended on May 24 with winners in 12 categories — including Best Feature 'If I Go Will They Miss Me,' Best Documentary 'Outlaws of the Everglades,' and Best Local Film 'Blisters and Brotherhood.'  WGCU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WeatherTiger forecasts a below-average hurricane season with 1 to 3 major hurricanes and 8 to 14 named storms expected ahead, with a roughly 30% chance of a major hurricane making landfall (Florida may face a higher proportion of impacts). Residents should stay apprised and prepare their hurricane emergency plans.  The News-Press
  • University of Florida researchers reviewed over 300 studies and found that hurricanes can sometimes help native species by filling ponds for frogs and boosting fish for birds, yet also spread invasive species and force migrations; their study offers insight as hurricane season begins on June 1.  The News-Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Florida health officials reported 154 measles cases in 15 counties this year after four new cases appeared on May 28 (three in Orange County and one in Palm Beach). They warned more cases are expected as summer travel begins and urged vaccination for protection.  The News-Press
  • Local health officials warn residents in Fort Myers that warmer coastal waters may fuel Vibrio vulnificus infections from June through September, so people should avoid raw shellfish and exposing open wounds to these waters.  The News-Press
  • OneBlood is calling on residents to donate blood+platelets, stating all blood types are needed with extra demand for O negative and O positive donations. Donors can schedule an appointment online or visit a Big Red Bus drive to help local hospitals save lives.  Cape Coral Breeze
