EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lee and Collier County libraries launched the annual summer reading program Unearth a Story on June 1 — offering free library performances, themed reading challenges and prize draws at local branches through the summer. ABC7
- ➤ Bahnam Builders launched the 'Stuff the Bus' drive, inviting Cape Coral residents to donate backpacks, pencils and other supplies from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through June 19 at the Bahnam Builders Crawford Model Home (4218 SW 17th Ave) to help students start school ready to learn. ABC7
- ➤ The National Weather Service will host free virtual training sessions on tropical readiness from July 27 to July 30, teaching Florida residents how to read weather forecasts and prepare for hurricanes. Sessions will run at 11 am, 1 pm, and 7 pm EDT and require pre-registration. WGCU
- ➤ The School District of Lee County + Summer BreakSpot will offer free 7-day breakfast and lunch meal kits for kids under 19, distributed Mondays from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at six schools and eight community sites from June 8 to July 27; families must show ID or proof of eligibility. WGCU
- ➤ The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium will lead Beat the Heat Beach Walks at Gulfside City Park on Sanibel Island to help participants explore the shoreline and learn about local shells. - ➤ Lee County’s ordinance bans lawn fertilizer with nitrogen or phosphorus in unincorporated areas until early November to protect local waterways, and similar rules apply in Fort Myers + Cape Coral. WGCU
- ➤ Keep Lee County Beautiful has partnered with Coors Light for a Coastal Cleanup that lets local residents vote for their favorite beach (including Fort Myers Beach) to host a cleanup event, while participants can also win a Turtlebox Bluetooth speaker. Beach Talk Radio
- ➤ Nearly four years after Hurricane Ian damaged Lynn Fanning’s home, she warns residents to document storm damage and get multiple repair quotes as hurricane season begins today. - ➤ Yesterday, June 1, hurricane season began as meteorological summer started, with NOAA and Colorado State University forecasting fewer storms due to El Niño and Saharan dust. The National Hurricane Center reported no tropical storm formation is expected in the next seven days. WINK News
