- ➤ Rising senior Sophia Fox of Fort Myers High School founded HALO to connect foster children with high school students for events and mentorship—since 2023 the program has raised $10,000 and helped over 100 foster kids by partnering with local schools including Canterbury School and Cypress Lake High School. - ➤ On Monday, a 12-year-old died after being pulled from a submerged car following a two-vehicle crash near Veterans Memorial Parkway between Surfside and Pine Island in Cape Coral — emergency crews rescued a critically injured adult and closed the road for hours — while investigators continue to review the incident. - ➤ Today, Lee County Public Safety Center is operating with a new $30 million two-story expansion that centralizes communication and houses key emergency responders for hurricane season. - ➤ Fort Myers City Council voted on June 2 to add $4.2 million for renovating historic McCollum Hall—once a hub for Black residents that hosted music legends like Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald. The project will create a food hall with healthy options and 26 apartments designated for workforce housing—plans delayed by financing issues and extended timelines. The News-Press

- ➤ Lee Health approved an extra $150.5 million to expand its Fort Myers medical campus by adding a new patient tower and an onsite childcare center that will boost capacity by 92 beds, including 48 acute care beds, 20 skilled nursing beds, and space reserved for 24 more acute care beds. The 53-acre campus, which will also feature a medical office building, 18 operating rooms, a 44-bed emergency department, and an onsite child development center, is expected to open in early 2028. - ➤ Fort Myers woman Stephanie Paradiso raised awareness about postpartum preeclampsia after suffering severe chest pain, headaches and swelling days after a normal birth. After two ER visits revealed her blood pressure climbed to dangerous levels, she is co-authoring a book and urging new moms to use a home blood pressure cuff—helping them catch warning signs early. - ➤ Lee Health is expanding its planned Fort Myers hospital to add an extra 92 beds in response to fast population growth and high demand for care — the facility will soon have 260 beds and a new child development center. The hospital is expected to welcome patients by summer 2028. ABC7
