EDUCATION NEWS

  • On June 1st, the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution urging the Lee County School Board and Superintendent Denise Carlin to keep Beach School open and honor the interlocal agreement for rebuilding the school — the resolution warned that closing the school would force young students to travel farther, raise costs for families and harm the island’s ability to attract new residents.  Beach Talk Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After Hurricane Milton damaged Englewood Beach in October 2024, Charlotte County Parks and Recreation said phase one repairs are complete and phase two work on environmental protections began to prevent further damage. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Fort Myers Beach Town Council approved the Arches Bayfront complex — including a 263-room hotel, dining, bars, retail and a bayfront promenade with a planned water ferry — despite concerns from Mayor Dan Allers and neighbors about increased density and noise. The developer scaled back earlier plans to secure four of five council votes as the island continues rebuilding after Hurricane Ian.  The News-Press
  • Lee County Undersheriff John Holloway’s daughter’s fiancé, Joe Trubilla, started a youth boxing program consulting contract with the sheriff’s office in September 2022 and saw his pay raised in June to $5,650 a month. The hiring has raised questions of nepotism—critics point to Trubilla’s limited qualifications and prior suspension from bodybuilding that call for further ethics investigations.  WGCU
