COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sanibel Captiva Community Bank donated $1,000 to FMB Strong to support recovery efforts for residents and workers on Fort Myers Beach after Hurricanes Ian, Helene and Milton. BUSINESS NEWS

  • On June 16, the Florida Department of Agriculture began enforcing new rules for hemp products—rules that require child-resistant packaging, clear serving sizes and a scannable QR code showing lab results—and labels in local stores have since changed. Buyers will pay higher taxes on these products starting July 1 as some Fort Myers business owners reported mixed feelings about the changes.  ABC7

CRIME NEWS

  • A Lehigh Acres man — Julio Enrique Velazquez, 26 — was sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping and 30 years for sexual battery after he attacked a woman in June 2023 when he offered her a ride from a club and drove her toward a secluded wooded area in North Fort Myers where she managed to escape.  ABC7
  • A Fort Myers woman was charged after authorities discovered 13 neglected puppies in an unventilated garage on Maytree Circle over the weekend—neighbors reported the puppies were uncovered, unfed, and without water while one needed veterinary care and all were taken into custody.  WINK News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida SouthWestern State College became the first state college in Southwest Florida to earn the Purple Heart College Designation, which honors its support for student veterans transitioning to college life, during a ceremony on Monday at 11 a.m. on Lee Campus — Building U, Room 102.  Fox 4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Fort Myers Beach Town Council approved the new Salty Crab building (5-0) on Monday, letting owner Greg Powers plan to break ground later this year and reopen the restaurant in the Fall of 2026. Powers must also work with the town to schedule truck deliveries from the nearby parking lot exclusively before 9 a.m. or after sunset.  Beach Talk Radio
  • Phase 2 of the roundabout construction began Monday along Buckingham and Gunnery roads in East Lee County and closed Buckingham Road from Gunnery to Sunset for detours through Gunnery and Sunset—temporary traffic lights and closed sidewalks are in place with work set to finish by spring 2026.  ABC7
