CULTURE NEWS

  • Southwest Florida is getting ready to celebrate Juneteenth with special events planned this week. On Thursday, June 19, Alliance for the Arts will show the documentary 'Juneteenth: Faith and Freedom' in Fort Myers from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.—and on Saturday, events in Punta Gorda and Fort Myers will feature family activities, live music and fireworks.  ABC7
  • Gulf Coast News visited Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Fort Myers to meet cast members for the shows 'Legally Blonde: The Musical' and 'The SpongeBob Musical'—the SpongeBob show runs until June 27 with only 8 performances while Legally Blonde started in May and will run until June 28.  ABC7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida Gulf Coast University announced it has received more than $22 million from the Elaine Nicpon Marieb Charitable Foundation to fund new instructional technology at Marieb College of Health & Human Services—a nine-year pledge that also provides naming rights for Academic Building 10, with construction set to begin in fall.  Florida Weekly
  • Lee School District seniors earned more than $70 million in scholarships to pay for college, technical training or military school after graduating in 2025. The 6,198 seniors from 15 high schools shared detailed post-graduation plans — 2,063 heading to four-year universities, 1,532 to two-year colleges, with others choosing technical schools, the workforce or the Armed Forces.  North Fort Myers Neighbor

  • The Everglades Foundation released a report that found the Everglades will generate more than $1 trillion in economic benefits for Florida over the next 50 years. The study shows that annual ecosystem services add an estimated $31.5 billion through clean water, real estate, and storm protection—highlighting the need for ongoing restoration.  WGCU

  • Southwest Florida attorney Christopher Vernon released a book called Investor Lifeguard: The One-of-a-Kind Handbook for Avoiding Bad Investments—an easy guide warning people against scams and risky brokers—and he hopes the clear advice will help protect hard-earned savings.  Florida Weekly

  • Lee County commissioners met Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. to gather residents' input on a possible rule to ban smoking and vaping at county parks and beaches—violators could face fines from $100 to $300 while unfiltered cigars remain exempt.  ABC7
  • Lee County commissioners approved HUD grants to rehabilitate 644 affordable housing units using $1.1 billion in federal funds allocated after Hurricane Ian—funds reallocated from stalled projects to secure affordable housing for the next 20 years.  WINK News
