- ➤ Florida Gulf Coast University worked with Florida Wildlife Control to remove one bear that was seen digging through trash near student housing starting on June 21—officials said improper trash disposal may be drawing the animals and urged students to use trash compactors. University Police issued an Eagle Alert on June 24 to remind everyone to stay cautious on campus. The News-Press

- ➤ At about 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday, troopers, North Fort Myers Fire and Lee County EMS attended a crash on Hancock Bridge Parkway west of Moody Road when an SUV struck a tree—its falling trunk killed an 18-year-old Fort Myers woman and injured two other 18-year-old women from Fort Myers and Cape Coral, and troopers later reopened the eastbound lanes as the investigation continues. - ➤ Fort Myers Police Department warns residents that celebratory gunfire is dangerous and illegal because stray bullets—falling to the ground—can injure or kill people, and extra patrols are planned to quickly respond to reports. ABC7

- ➤ Arts Center Theatre has launched an Encore Series to offer quality summer entertainment with a line-up including 'Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End' featuring Louise Cornetta on July 24, 25, 26 & 27 and Peter Vogel’s one-man show 'Til Death Do Us Part & You First' on Aug. 6. - ➤ Collier County is renovating the 951 boat ramp on Collier Boulevard by replacing the seawall, installing new boat ramp structures with ADA-compliant features, and repaving the parking lot with added lighting—officials say the facility will reopen by the end of August. The project, managed by Fort Myers contractor Kelly Brothers, Inc. under a $1.22 million contract awarded in October, supports the county’s efforts to upgrade its popular boating parks.
