  • A groundbreaking ceremony was held this week at the Gulf Coast Humane Society in Fort Myers for a new 10,000 square foot veterinary clinic that will combine two existing clinics to double exam capacity—builders plan to finish the donor-funded expansion in 9 months to 1 year.  WGCU

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In Lehigh Acres, 13-year-old Dayton Diaz was honored for his quick action when he called 911 after his friend Scott Walsh was injured in a bicycle accident with a four-wheeler—Walsh suffered multiple fractures and is recovering faster than expected.  Fox 4

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fort Myers residents will see 'Hair,' a musical inspired by the 1960s at Hinman Auditorium in Arts Bonita from July 11 through July 21, with evening shows at 7 p.m. and matinees at 2 p.m.—the production features a 25-person cast performing iconic tunes that capture the era's spirit and social change.  Florida Weekly
  • Arts Bonita’s production of Hair will run July 11 to 20 at the Arts Bonita Performing Arts Center—featuring high school and college stars alongside a live band that plays with the cast to bring the show’s protest message to life. Directors Kody Jones and Joseph Brauer say the musical shows that silence in response to government actions can be taken as approval.  WGCU

  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law that requires parents to consent before any corporal punishment is given in public schools, and the measure took effect on July 1. The rule comes after a report of 516 instances last school year + school boards must review their policies every three years.  WINK News

  • Over the weekend in Lehigh Acres, a deputy caught a ball python on a pool deck and put it in a water cooler—highlighting local efforts to manage snake encounters. Registration is open for the 2025 Florida Python Challenge, a 10-day event starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 11 and ending at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 20 that will help remove invasive Burmese pythons from the Everglades.  ABC7
  • Renowned Everglades photographer Clyde Butcher said the new migrant detention center called 'Alligator Alcatraz' six miles east of his gallery threatens the fragile lands he has documented for 40 years—environmental groups have filed a lawsuit demanding a full impact review while state officials defend the project. The center's development has raised concerns about potential pollution and damage to one of the most pristine areas in the United States.  ABC7
