  • The Spirit of ’45 event will return on August 10 at The Club at Pelican Preserve in Fort Myers — dinner begins at 4:15 p.m. and the ceremony honoring WWII veterans will conclude around 7:15 p.m. The event's chairman urges the public to notify veterans and offers sponsorships with reservations required by Aug. 3.  The News-Press
  • U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Fort Myers Beach Flotilla 91 will host a Boat America Responsible Boating Course on July 19 at the Pine Ridge Community Center at 15660 Pine Ridge Road to teach water rules, boat equipment use and emergency preparation — the $45 course aims to help local families and solo boaters practice safe boating ahead of World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25.  WGCU
  • Captiva’s Bubble Room reopens today at 11 a.m. with its near-original look nearly three years after Hurricane Ian forced its closure — visitors might notice a few upgrades and will be served on a first-come, first-served basis.  WINK News

  • On Saturday, a protester's leg was run over when a Jeep hit him outside Alligator Alcatraz on U.S. 41 — he was taken to Kendall Regional Hospital while Florida Highway Patrol responded and the driver remained on the scene.  ABC7

CRIME NEWS

  • Police and fire crews surrounded a Cape Coral home on Country Club Blvd just after midnight on July 13 using flashing lights plus crime scene tape while neighbors saw officers detain several individuals in handcuffs.  ABC7
  • Jacob Tate lost control and crashed his vehicle into several cars at a Perkins parking lot in Lehigh Acres, causing at least one serious injury before he was arrested for multiple DUI counts—he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.  WINK News
  • A Florida-born Palestinian-American from Port Charlotte named 20-year-old Sayfollah Musallet was killed on Friday in the West Bank by Israeli settlers while defending his family's land in Sinjil - his family now calls for a U.S. State Department investigation.  WINK News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the FDOT and partners launched Operation Southern Slow Down in Fort Myers to reduce speeding crashes—starting with a press conference at the Florida Highway Patrol on Daniels Parkway at 10 a.m. The week-long campaign will promote safer driving habits on interstates and state highways through collaboration with local law enforcement.  WINK News

  • Lee Health plans to open a new healthcare facility in the Bimini Square area of Cape Coral this fall—its services will include adult and pediatric primary care, behavioral health, imaging and lab services, and pediatric rehabilitation for local residents and visitors.  ABC7
