ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, a high-pressure system brings dry air and Saharan dust that raises temperatures into the low to mid-90s and stops most afternoon storms in Florida. The dust will color sunrises and sunsets and may worsen breathing for some residents—stay hydrated—.  WGCU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lee County has begun installing parking cameras at 18 beach and park sites including Lynn Hall Memorial Park on Fort Myers Beach—these cameras scan license plates upon entry and will soon time how long it takes to pay. County officials said no camera-generated fines have been issued yet and that the flexible grace period may affect visitors if delays lead to a potential $50 citation.  ABC7
  • Fort Myers Beach residents are asking for more time to stay in their mobile homes after FEMA set a deadline to remove trailers by Aug. 8 — many worry about moving before they sell their homes. Town officials are talking with FEMA — hoping for a revised plan that lets families like the Millers find safer alternatives.  NBC2

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local animal experts warn that mosquitoes in Fort Myers are spreading heartworm to pets, which can cause lung damage and even death without monthly treatment. Pest management specialists also note that ticks are increasingly common—pet owners should inspect their animals regularly to catch tick infestations early.  North Fort Myers Neighbor

SPORTS NEWS

  • FGCU women’s basketball will host South Carolina on Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. at Alico Arena in Fort Myers — the Gamecocks, led by coach Dawn Staley with three national titles, are set to challenge FGCU under new coach Raina Harmon.
