Good morning, Fort Myers. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 6th of August.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lee County schools Superintendent Dr. Denise Carlin and the executive team will visit several schools next Monday to mark the first day of classes—starting with a driver sendoff at the South Zone Bus Compound at 5:45 a.m., proceeding to welcome students at Trafalgar, Caloosa, Orange River, and Varsity Lakes Middle schools, and ending with Treeline Elementary in Fort Myers at dismissal.  WINK News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County leaders in Charlotte County are discussing a plan to add roundabouts at the Buc-ee's on the southwest corner of I-75 and Harborview Road to slow traffic and reduce congestion. They are asking the company to pay a fee for the impact on the road while discussions continue at the next commission meeting — some locals say the design may confuse drivers.  ABC7
  • The Lee Board of County Commissioners awarded a $3.86 million contract to Stokes Marine, Inc. to repair boardwalks at four parks (Caloosahatchee Regional, Galt, Matanzas Pass and Royal Palm) that were destroyed by Hurricane Ian. Repair work is expected to begin this fall and finish in about a year, weather permitting.  WINK News
  • Today the City of Fort Myers launched FixMyFort, a free app that lets residents report issues like cracked sidewalks and water leaks. The system routes requests to the right department — helping crews fix problems faster and keep everyone informed.  Florida Weekly
  • The Lee County Commissioners approved plans to expand the Cape Coral Bridge, fix the Matlacha drawbridge damaged by Hurricane Ian, repair four damaged boardwalks in county parks, and boost cleanup efforts in Lehigh Acres — each project will use federal, state and local funds and start at different times. Bridge work will begin in 2028 while drawbridge repairs and boardwalk fixes are set for early September through the fall — county officials said.  WGCU
  • Citizens gathered at the Fort Myers City Council meeting last night to protest the ICE 287(g) program that makes the police help detain undocumented immigrants — more than 30 people, including activists from Sin Fronteras SWFL and the Florida Valkyries, spoke out about fears of racial profiling and weakened trust in law enforcement. The protest follows the council’s recent reversal of its earlier decision against cooperating with ICE after state officials pressured a change.  WGCU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Chas and Chris Williams donated $100,000 to Golisano Children’s Hospital to help cover travel, lodging, and meal expenses for families with children undergoing hematology and oncology care—supporting over 90 patients currently receiving treatment.  Cape Coral Breeze
