CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities are seeking Marleen Colon, 43, of Fort Myers after she violated probation by showing up drunk to a court-ordered recovery program following a DUI arrest that involved a car crash injuring herself and two others—she has six previous arrests for charges including weapons, drugs, battery and DUIs.  ABC7
  • A 24-year-old Arcadia man, Israel Rivas, was arrested after he shook his two-month-old child in a Fort Myers bar parking lot—hospital staff confirmed the baby suffered shaken baby syndrome but is not expected to have lasting injuries.  Fox 4

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Most Southwest Florida schools will open their doors on Monday, Aug. 11 for the 2025-26 school year while Monroe County and Miami-Dade start on Aug. 13 and Aug. 14 respectively, and Lee County officials urge parents to support their children's learning and remind drivers to stop for school buses — ensuring safety for students walking nearby. Additional measures include new cell phone restrictions in schools and speed cameras in Cape Coral to enforce school zone limits.  WGCU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fort Myers residents should note that the Gulf Coast Hurricane Tracking Team is monitoring two Atlantic areas for potential tropical development—one area linked to Invest 96L has low odds today because of dry air but may become more favorable next week, while a tropical wave off Africa has a medium chance of forming over the next seven days. Officials emphasize that neither system poses any threat to Florida at this time.  NBC2
