CRIME NEWS

  • Fugitive Jamie Jenks was arrested in North Fort Myers on August 11 after a nearly two-hour crisis negotiation—he had escaped a St. Petersburg correctional facility on August 3 while serving a two-year sentence for theft and barricaded himself on the 1330 block of Lavin Lane before surrendering peacefully.  The News-Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting Monday, Lee County students must stow their cellphones in backpacks during the school day as the district enforces a new ban to reduce distractions—students can keep phones for emergencies. Gateway High and Lehigh schools have seen better focus, and teachers and parents support the policy for keeping classrooms on track.  WINK News
  • Lee County Schools reduced teacher vacancies from 235 to 39 by hosting recruitment fairs + virtual outreach and school events, while the district works on improving salaries and working conditions and offers up to $9,000 to retain teachers in high-risk schools.  WINK News
  • Students went back to school on Monday, August 11 as Lee County Schools began a new academic year with buses leaving the depot on Six Mlie Cypress Drive + Superintendent Denise Carlin greeted the bus drivers while students shared smiles and waves.   • Twelve Lee County Public Schools appointed new principals as the new school year began yesterday—leaders now serve across eight elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, and Success Academy, bringing extensive local experience from past roles in the district.   • Meteorologist Jim Dickey said an area of low pressure near the Cabo Verde Islands is expected to develop into the next named storm and likely the first hurricane of 2025 this week. Models show it will strengthen and turn north before reaching our Gulf Coast — officials are monitoring the system closely.  NBC2

  • Lee County Public Safety is asking residents for feedback as it updates its community wildfire protection plan to help guide wildfire response and education. The plan addresses risks from trees downed by Hurricane Ian+ and will be used to secure federal mitigation funds.  WGCU
