CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Fugitive Jamie Jenks was arrested in North Fort Myers on August 11 after a nearly two-hour crisis negotiation—he had escaped a St. Petersburg correctional facility on August 3 while serving a two-year sentence for theft and barricaded himself on the 1330 block of Lavin Lane before surrendering peacefully. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Starting Monday, Lee County students must stow their cellphones in backpacks during the school day as the district enforces a new ban to reduce distractions—students can keep phones for emergencies. Gateway High and Lehigh schools have seen better focus, and teachers and parents support the policy for keeping classrooms on track. WINK News
- ➤ Lee County Schools reduced teacher vacancies from 235 to 39 by hosting recruitment fairs + virtual outreach and school events, while the district works on improving salaries and working conditions and offers up to $9,000 to retain teachers in high-risk schools. WINK News
- ➤ Students went back to school on Monday, August 11 as Lee County Schools began a new academic year with buses leaving the depot on Six Mlie Cypress Drive + Superintendent Denise Carlin greeted the bus drivers while students shared smiles and waves.
