- ➤ A Fort Myers man changed his plea on the third day of his trial by pleading no contest for leaving the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash in Tice on Jan. 6 and tampering with evidence—Lee County Judge Maria Gonzalez sentenced him to four years in prison. The News-Press

- ➤ Local Theatre Conspiracy is taking its final bow at Off Broadway Palm with its world premiere, 'Sharing the Same Umbrella' by local playwright Wayne Keller. The preview on Aug. 21 took place at 7:30 p.m. and the show will run through Sunday, Aug. 31—marking a historic farewell. ABC7

- ➤ Today, Hurricane Erin has a huge wind field that reaches hurricane-force winds 105 miles out and tropical storm-force winds 320 miles away — this means all of Florida fits inside its area. Experts say the storm will stay offshore and not make landfall, lowering the risk of severe flooding. ABC7

- ➤ Council Member John R. King was appointed to the Florida League of Cities Board of Directors on August 16 in Orlando — he was also elected Vice President of the Southwest Florida League of Cities as Town Manager Will McKannay praised his role in advancing local governance. - ➤ Lee County is addressing flood risks along the Ten Mile Canal with a total of $2.6 million in new funding — $1.3 million from the county to clear invasive plants and open a new channel and another $1.3 million from the state for the Ten Mile Weir project near Fort Myers. The county project may begin by the end of this year or early next year while the state project moves through design and permitting over the next six months. WINK News
- ➤ Spin electric scooters have officially launched downtown and Mayor Kevin Anderson said city leaders expect the program to bring in $30,000 this year if riders follow the rules. The scooters use technology that alerts fleet managers to improper parking and enforces fines, with the city set to reassess and expand the program if it proves effective. WINK News

- ➤ Tests on Lake Okeechobee showed blue-green algae were six times too toxic for human safety — scientists at Florida Gulf Coast University found a liver toxin in samples taken near the lake and warned that water releases into the Caloosahatchee River could raise risks for local pets and waterways.
