  • Mon Paris coffee shop and bakery in Fort Myers reopened on August 20 with a new owner and a fresh menu of all-day brunch items and baked goods. Owner Veronika Maivaldova, who brings experience from bakeries and bistros in the Czech Republic, said the cafe now offers specialty sandwiches and locally sourced ingredients — and will add more items soon.  The News-Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Beach Kids Foundation awarded $21,000 in scholarships—and hosted a dinner at Island Pancake House on Fort Myers Beach—to honor local pioneers Tom Myers and Roxie Smith while recognizing student Chris Prisco, who will attend Florida SouthWestern State College. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, heavy showers and thunderstorms will increase flooding risks along the Gulf Coast as yesterday's rain left the ground saturated—rain chances remain high through Monday. Portions north of the Caloosahatchee may see the highest amounts while Tropical Storm Fernand moves north without impacting land.  ABC7
  • Residents are urged to prepare for hurricanes as if a major storm will hit today—recent events show that even off-course hurricanes can cause heavy winds, storm surge and flooding. They are advised to gather essential supplies, know their evacuation zones and check forecasts regularly for any changes.  The News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A fourth weekly vigil was held outside Alligator Alcatraz detention center on August 24 — after a federal judge ruled that the facility must shut down in 60 days for violating federal law. Religious groups prayed, sang, and chanted shut it down outside as protests grew over its treatment of detainees.  ABC7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Golisano Children's Hospital held its Cuts for a Cause event at Boomz Barbershop on Sunday morning to raise funds for Barbara's Friends to help kids battling cancer; Dr. Scott Cesear had his head shaved by 15-year-old Alba (a cancer survivor) as part of the event (which ended at 2 p.m.).  WINK News

  • High school football season is here and local reporter Dustin Levy is spending the next 10-12 weeks on the sidelines covering SWFL games—he writes previews, collects stats and posts real-time updates on game day. He also builds early relationships with coaches and players during media days as Friday Night Football draws in excited fans until early November.  The News-Press
