Good morning, Fort Myers. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 28th of August.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mayor Allers thanked Senator Scott, Senator Moody, and Congressman Donalds for a FEMA disaster recovery award of over $11 million that will help rebuild Fort Myers Beach Elementary School—Town Manager McKannay said work with the Lee County School Board will repair six main buildings and replace structures damaged by Hurricane Ian to keep the school in operation as soon as possible.  City of Fort Myers Beach

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forecasters say the tropics are quiet today because dry air, wind shear, and cool water stirred by Hurricane Erin have slowed storm formation—further, a rare Labor Day storm may form in the Gulf when a strong jet stream dip moves in and conditions change by early September.  The News-Press
  • Hundreds of loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings have died this season on Fort Myers Beach because unshielded non-amber lights have drawn them away from the Gulf. Town officials and Turtle Time are working together — by checking lighting and contacting property owners — to enforce the town’s rule and help protect the threatened turtles.  Beach Observer and Beach Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state changed its law so Fort Myers shoppers can now buy tax-free hurricane supplies — such as batteries, tarps, and generators — all year. Local store owners warn that waiting until a storm arrives may leave shelves empty, urging consumers to shop early.  Fox 4
  • Today, the Town of Fort Myers Beach announced the completion of the offshore dredging for the Estero Island Shore Protection Project—about 1 million cubic yards of sand was moved from 7 miles of eroding shoreline. Dune vegetation will soon be planted to strengthen coastal safety and storm resilience.  City of Fort Myers Beach

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cape Coral Fire Battalion Chief Nick Bonnic will have his head shaved for the Clips for Cancer charity event in September—if he raises $10,000, he will also shave his mustache—with the event held at Bell Tower Shops in Fort Myers on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.  ABC7
