  • Today at Florida Southwestern State College, 650 runners kicked off the Tunnel to Towers 5K at 8 a.m. and raised $50,000 to help injured first responders, military veterans, and their families—honoring the legacy of New York City Firefighter Stephen Siller and marking the event’s eighth year.  ABC7

  • The family of 17-year-old Shylah Desamours mourned her tragic death when her jet ski collided with a boat near Captiva Pass on September 6—her loss coming just two days after her birthday spurred the creation of a memorial fund that has raised over $18,000 to support Lehigh Senior High students in dance, academics, and leadership.  NBC2

  • A jury convicted former Charlotte County Fire & EMS Deputy Chief Michael Vernon Davis of impaired driving after he was arrested on Christmas Day in Lee County for failing field sobriety tests—he was sentenced to 12 months probation.  The News-Press
  • An 81-year-old North Fort Myers man changed his plea to not contest second-degree murder charges for suffocating his wife during her sleep amid financial and medical hardships—his sentencing was set for Oct. 31 but was delayed over a month—.  The News-Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Gulf Coast Storm Team is tracking a tropical wave over the Atlantic that has a 60% chance to become a tropical depression in the next seven days—down from a 90% chance forecast earlier. Forecasters note a 30% chance for it to organize in the next two days, and if it strengthens into a tropical storm, it will be named Gabrielle.  ABC7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Veterans in Estero participated in the Home Base Golf Tournament on Saturday at Copperleaf Golf and Country Club—raising funds for Home Base Florida to help veterans with mental and physical injuries—just days before September 11.  WINK News

  • On Friday, Cypress Lake beat Fort Myers 20 to 7 in a road game for the first time since 2006 (Fort Myers played without head coach Sam Sirianni).  The News-Press
  • Former WNBA veteran Destanni Henderson was inducted into the Fort Myers High Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday night—she was honored along with softball player Josey Mayer and tennis player John Carlin. A Fort Myers High graduate and McDonald's All-American, Henderson played four seasons in the league before joining teams overseas.  NBC2
