  • The Kiwanis Club of Cape Coral is hosting KidsFest—a free event for families with hands-on crafts, interactive games, and costume contests—at 544 Cultural Park Blvd. on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  WGCU
  • Three years after Hurricane Ian hit Sanibel, Florida Gulf Coast University created an AI powered dashboard to track the island’s economic, tourism and housing recovery progress. Local leaders, including the chamber of commerce president, say the Sanibel Solutions dashboard provides clear data — showing causeway traffic is near 82% and vacation rentals at 79% as the community guides further recovery efforts.  ABC7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Professor Nora Demers from Florida Gulf Coast University collected oysters from several Estero Bay locations on Monday, Sept. 22 for her study on Vibrio vulnificus. Graduate researcher Ellie Cook and student assistant Alese Lissow helped record water quality and sea grass data — key details that support the investigation.  The News-Press
  • The Heights Center announced a $2.5 million state appropriation to fund the new Heights CareerTech Institute in Southwest Florida. Scheduled to open in 2026, the school will train students in high-demand sectors—construction, automotive, marine, healthcare, culinary and early childhood education—to help fill regional job vacancies.  Florida Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Marco Island resident John Johnson started a business to remove invasive iguanas after one raided an owl nest, and he uses his .25 caliber air gun — approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission — to clear them from roofs, docks and seawalls. He has removed around 1,500 iguanas so far and hopes to slow their rapid spread to protect local wildlife and property.  The News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new traffic signal was installed at Fifth Street and San Carlos Boulevard in Fort Myers Beach and began operating in a flashing yellow phase on Sept. 23. The signal is part of a $13 million FDOT project to ease traffic congestion and improve travel during peak tourist season — FDOT advises drivers to exercise caution while the system transitions to full operation.  The News-Press
  • Construction on Tamiami Trail in North Fort Myers shifted lane closures from the left lanes to the right lanes on September 17, causing heavy traffic that affects residents and local businesses. FDOT says the new setup will boost safety and traffic flow until the work finishes by late 2025 or early 2026—drivers are adjusting to the changes.  WINK News
  • Lee County Supervisor of Elections Tommy Doyle finalized the recall ballot for Fort Myers Beach councilmembers John King and Karen Woodson as voters begin receiving mail-in ballot request notices by Oct. 23 — the ballot asks if voters want to recall the councilmembers and then choose among replacement candidates, with in-person voting set for Nov. 4 at Bay Oaks Recreational Campus from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Beach Observer and Beach Bulletin
  • City officials said posted speed limits in school zones, not flashing lights, control how fast drivers can go—drivers must slow down and follow the signs. At a Cape Coral City Council update, they noted the school zone speed program recorded over 30,000 violations from April 28 to July 31 with nearly $900,000 in fines to boost safety.  Cape Coral Breeze

HEALTH NEWS

  • Isaiah Phipps, a teen from Fort Myers Beach battling chronic kidney, heart, and rare blood diseases, was honored as an honorary firefighter by the local fire department—a nod to his determination—and earned an honorary boat captain license while joining the Coast Guard with support from his mother.  WINK News
  • Fish of Sancap partnered with SalusCare to offer free mental health sessions every Wednesday at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church on Sanibel Island—30-minute meetings designed to help residents cope with anxiety, fear and trauma after Hurricane Ian. Appointments are scheduled by email or by calling 239-472-4775.  WGCU
  • In Southwest Florida, experts say keeping food safe after a hurricane is vital. They advise that refrigerators stay cold for about 4 hours and freezers up to 48 hours if unopened — and recommend running a generator for one hour every few hours to help prevent foodborne illness — so households are better prepared.  The News-Press
